Freak No More. It appears that Governor Joan Ferguson’s reign of terror at Wentworth Correctional has come to an end.
This article contains spoilers so if you haven’t seen Wentworth, please do not continue reading.
Governor Joan Ferguson left a path of destruction in her wake at Wentworth Correction. She used fear and intimidation as her tools of operation and didn’t care who she hurt if they got in her way.
Ferguson’s death toll included Simone Slater and Jess Warner but fortunately, due to the bravery of Bea Smith, Franky Doyle and Will Jackson, Doreen and Nash’s son, Baby Joshua, didn’t end up on the casualty list. The fire at Wentworth Correction in the Season 3 finale “Blood and Fire” was a sort of cleansing for several characters: Franky got to play the hero, proving to herself what the audience always knew, that she wasn’t a bad person, Matt got payback against Governor Ferguson for ruining and almost taking his life and well Ferguson, she got the comeuppance she so richly deserved and will have to pay for her crimes.
Ferguson ran a tight ship (Like Captain Blight in “Mutiny on the Bounty”) so what will Wentworth Correctional be without her? It depends on who the new governor will be. I can’t imagine anyone as ruthless and sadistic as Joan Ferguson but I’m also not naive to believe that another psychopath wouldn’t exist in the prison system.
Perhaps we’ll see a more sensitive an caring administrator with compassion. But would the prisoners run over someone like this? The prisoners already have their leader, Bea Smith, it will be interesting to see how she and the new governor get along.
I’m sure there will be many changes at Wentworth Correctional when Wentworth returns for Season 4.
