I love to craft. I’m also a geek. As some of you might have seen on Twitter, the two worlds collide quite often! Naturally, I wanted to share that with The Nerdy Girl Express. This post is going to be the first in a series of posts where I will share some things I have made. Also, I thought it would be fun if you the readers wanted to suggest things for me to make, e.g movies, tv shows, comic books, etc.
Since this is the fist post though, I thought it would be fun to just share some things I’ve made recently! I’ve been on a bit of a Harry Potter kick lately. I’ve been watching the movies and have had the desire to reread the books. It is a fandom that is close to my heart! So of course, the first thing I was craving to make, was my very own wizard wand. Because lets be honest, what is a wizard without his wand?
Last weekend we were driving around and noticed a turn off for the Yellowstone River. We noticed that the river was quite low so we decided to go walk around. My mother-in-law loves to collect rocks, so it was fun looking at all the river rocks. Anyway, I was walking on the sandbar when I noticed a bunch of driftwood. I love driftwood. The way the current of the water slightly changes and smoothes the pieces of wood is an artists delight! I found a few that looked like they would make perfect wands! As soon as I got home, I sanded it completely smooth and then stained it with a walnut color stain. I couldn’t be happier with the way it turned out! The natural knot and piece of bark made the perfect placement for the handle. Gotta love nature right?!?
Of course, once I made a wand, I decided to go the route of Severus Snape and make some potions. Spells are a wizards bread and butter, but you can never have too many potions! You never know when you might need a bezoar or some Felix Felices!
Its pretty amazing what you can do with clear glue, glitter, and some polymer clay! The first bottle as it states is Phoenix Tears. Who could forget the beautiful and heroic Fawkes! If you’ll remember, Dumbledore did say that their tears had healing powers! Perfect addition to any witch or wizards cuboard. Next we have Ground Unicorn Horn. This is a rare commodity and probably sold only in the dark areas of Nocturne Alley. Most likely if you are caught with this by the Ministry of Magic, you will be headed straight to Azkaban! Unicorns after all are an endangered species! And last, but certainly not least, is some Liquid Luck! I’m sure there are a few of us out there that could use this from time to time. Have an impossible test tomorrow? Want to ask one of the girls from Beauxbatons Academy of Magic to the Yule Ball? This is the potion for you!
I had a lot of fun making these! The potions were extraordinarily easy to make. I got everything from my local craft store. The glass vials are about 2″ tall and about 1″ in diameter. They already came with the corks. I added a headpin to turn them into a charm for a necklace! Add some glitter to some clear glue(and food coloring if you want to tint the glue for more dramatic colors) and then use some strong glue to seal the cork on! I printed out the labels on my computer and burned the edges to give them an antique quality. What I loved most about this project were the endless possibilities! Use your imagination and go wild!
Hope you guys enjoyed reading this as much as I did making them! If you have any ideas on what you’d like to see me make next, leave it in the comments down below! Follow me on Twitter @luckynerdgirl where you can also tweet me your suggestions! Follow @thenerdygirlexp for all your nerdy delights!
