On August 19, 1975, Mary Campbell married John Winchester and that union produced two strong men who would go on to save the world, Supernatural’s Sam and Dean (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles).

Although their marriage was short-lived due to Mary’s death at the hands of Azazel, today Supernatural fans celebrate the 42nd wedding anniversary of John and Mary Winchester (Matt Cohen, Amy Gumenick, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Samantha Smith).

John never knew that Mary came from a long line of a family that hunted supernatural evil, and that he himself was a legacy (“Chroniclers of all which couldn’t be explained”- Henry Winchester, Supernatural Season 8, Episode 12 “As Time Goes By”). All they knew was that they loved each other and wanted to start a life together. That future was torn apart and John became fixated on finding the thing that destroyed his family as well as training his sons to protect themselves against things that went bump in the night.  As a long-time viewer of Supernatural, I often wondered what kind of marriage John and Mary would have had if she hadn’t been killed. We know they had fights.  In the episode “Dark Side of the Moon” one of Dean’s memories showed one time they had been estranged. And let’s face it, both John and Mary had strong personalities.  But I believe their love for each other and their children would have weathered any storm.  Would Sam and Dean have grown up with a “normal apple pie life”? Or would the hunting addiction had kept Mary fighting supernatural evil in secret like she did when she met Asa Fox in Supernatural Season 12 Episode 6 “Celebrating the Life of Asa Fox”?  These are speculations that will never been answered.  But today, we say Happy Anniversary and celebrate 42 years of a chapter in the life of the Winchesters.
