Call Me God: The Untold Story of the DC Sniper @audible_com Review from @kleffnotes

Call Me God: The Untold Story of the DC Sniper Investigation is a new true crime feature that has joined the growing collection of productions of this genre in the Audible library. Released earlier this month, this production focuses on the untold elements of the DC Sniper investigation. With an overarching narrated element to guide the story, this work presents a variety of people who were connected to the case. These first hand stories are told by people who were either impacted by a death that occurred within the span of the 2002 crimes or who were in some way part of the investigation. Whether you are typically a true crime reader or listener or not this is something that will teach you something and will open up the world of how complex crimes can be both for those who are victims and for those trying to solve them.

For those who are unfamiliar with the DC Sniper investigation, these events took place in 2002 in the DC Metropolitan area and had those living there gripped with fear. The shootings were random and the shooter didn’t seem to care who their victims were. No one felt safe and in response people hid within their homes and even those investigating feared for the lives of their families. As the case evolved it would become apparent that this was not one person, but two who were committing these horrendous crimes. Beyond that fact that these were already horrific crimes, investigators had to examine them in connection to possible terrorism attacks as this was just one year after the events of 9/11. As the story unfolds over the course of this audio presentation, you will see how complex the investigation was and how various threads had to be examined in order to try and learn why these crimes were occurring.

The elements for me, a human raised in the world of true crime from a very early age, that stood out were the elements of the investigation that I personally know very little about. When delving into scent analysis and how an adorable sounding basset hound was brought in to try and track the killer I learned just how much work dogs trained to scent do. This segment also delved into how much work is done to prepare these dogs and why basset hounds are also ideal for this sort of work. Who knew that gooey jowls could help in scent collection? I also really enjoyed the discussion of language analysis in connection to the tarot card that was left for the police. This section revealed so much about how what we write can reveal details about our lives. There were also heartbreaking moments where the survivors of victims discuss their lives now that the person they love is gone. The fact that the brother of one victim just wishes he could call his older brother emphasizes the human element of these terrible events. Call Me God: The Untold Story of the DC Sniper Investigation is available on Audible today. Make sure to keep your eyes and ears peeled for more true crime features to come from Audible.
