I feel deepest sympathy for the parents, family and all loved ones on this terrible, needless loss of their beloved Yingying Zhang at the University of Illinois to such a horrific crime by the man who killed her. I am professionally trained and experienced in what the counselors at U. of Illinois confronted. I have, myself, been in the position of handling circumstances similar to what they faced when this killer shared with them months in advance about his homicidal impulses and anticipatory actions. Against this background of training and experience I strongly believe the school counselors and University of Illinois should be further investigated and duly held accountable for not having acted responsibly or appropriately, professionally, in their roles to have done more to prevent this crime. If for some reason the counselors were deficient in their capacities to have known what to do, then clear fault and liability lies with the university, itself, for not having employed professionals adequately trained, credentialed and equipped to properly handle mental health situations with mental health staff sufficiently trained and experienced to keep students safe. This is was their responsibility and at key points in my professional opinion they failed. Yingying Zhang and her family most certainly deserved far better. The University of Illinois will forever be in their debt at least morally and ethically for what is clear they should have done but did not, to prevent such a gruesome, heinous crime of murder against one of their own students.
