I had the chance to chat with Jeff Teravainen about his upcoming role on the Hulu series, Utopia Falls. We also delved briefly into his time on Dark Matter, the much beloved science fiction show that was tragically cancelled too soon. Thank you to Jeff Teravainen for answering all of my questions.
Could you tell our readers a little about yourself?
I am an actor, voice actor guy! Lucky to be doing what I love. I’ve been doing it for a while now. I live in Toronto, Canada. Love photography, history, nature, scuba, and motoracing, especially MotoGP.
How would you describe Utopia Falls?
Hundreds of years after a cataclysmic event , New Babyl is humanity’s last stand. On the surface things look pretty good but when a group of kids stumble upon a cave hiding relics of the past, they start to see things very differently. If you have seen the trailers, there has been a very heavy emphasis on the dance and music especially. However, don’t be fooled by that. This show is true sci-fi with some great characters and stories. It takes on many arcs. I said they other day to the shows creator and new bud RT, it has a Pixar effect. Watching with my family with all different ages was interesting. Like a good Pixar film, there is something for me, for my Daughter, Wife, Brother, everyone. The films work because everyone gets something. There is the true sci-fi element and there is the music, but it is not a musical. It can be funny at times, and also take on serious issues. Everything seems to have the right amount of time to make it interesting.
What is your character Gerald’s role?
Gerald is one of the five leaders of New Babyl, The Tribunal. They are almost like deities there. He is also the loving Father of the show’s main character Aliyah. When the kids discover the archive, Gerald’s world gets turned on its head.
What were some of your favorite on set moments?
Having worked with showrunner Joe Mallozzi on Dark Matter, he brought a lot of his team to Utopia Falls. So it was like coming home in a sense. Then there were all my new friends too. It was an amazing place to go everyday! I loved all the scenes for different reasons. But my faves were with Robyn Alomar, my Daughter. We got to have some really powerful moments. I think the combination of me loving my own daughter so much and Robyn being so likeable really helped me go where I needed in the scenes. I have taken away so many amazing memories with the cast and crew.
You were previously on one of my favorite shows, Dark Matter, what was that experience like?
Dark Matter was a dream for me. I had never felt so welcome on a set before. Immediately I became friends with everyone. I will always remember on the last day of shooting season one, the cast all got in for a group hug. We had just shot the scene of Roger and I walking with the Raza crew as prisoners. I felt awkward because these guys were clearly close, like family. But Anthony looked over, grabbed and pulled me in saying “get in here, you are part of this too now.” That really meant a lot to me. That was the way they all were. Anders was such a great character to play and the scenes with Roger, Anthony and all were marvelous. The next season I was to be a regular, so it was heartbreaking to see it end. I still hold a hope that someday we can finish that story. But again, I walked with such great memories and amazing friends. The fans continue to blow my mind.
Do you have any other upcoming projects you’d like to discuss?
Most of the things are in that stage that I have to stay silent. For example, I am shooting a Video Game. We are just starting the performance capture. I play an Eastern European. So much fun! I’m kind of a borderline addict with video games, so being in them is a treat. I have been in quite a few, recently FAR CRY 5 and Assassin’s Creed. Some great looking films are hitting the festival circuit soon so hopefully they will be getting distribution. One is the horror film “Jades Asylum”, a film we shot in the jungles of Costa Rica with director Alexandre Carrière .That was something to behold. We shot mostly in this ultra luxurious mansion on a seaside cliff against the jungle. Magic! I play a real scumbag in it, but it’s fun to be bad right?
