George Kennedy, a television and film actor best known for the Airport movies has died. He was 91.
George Kennedy started his acting career with a brief part in the 1960 film, Spartacus and went on to appear in The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come, Charade, Strait-Jacket , Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte, The Flight of the Phoenix and In Harm’s Way. Kennedy won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Cool Hand Luke.
He had many television credits including Gunsmoke,The Andy Griffith Show, Peter Gunn,Bonanza, Maverick, McHale’s Navy, Route 66. But he was best known to television audiences for his portrayal of Carter McKay in Dallas.
Then came the series of Airport movies where he played Joe Patroni. He was in another film series, The Naked Gun with Leslie Nielsen.
He played Victor Newman’s biological father in the CBS soap The Young and the Restless.
I remember watching Dallas on Friday night in the late 70s with my mom and twin sister Tracy. My mom was familiar with George Kennedy’s work from his films and thought he was perfect as Carter McKay.
George Kennedy has given countless television and film audiences hours of enjoyment through his performances. His body of work is a lasting legacy to his acting talents and he will be missed.
