I made the mistake of watching the trailer for Season 3 of Doc, and now I have thoughts. A lot of thoughts.
Season 3 doesn’t even premiere until September 22, and somehow I am already mad at Dr. Ben Grant.
Let me start by saying I love this show. I have been invested in Amy Larsen and her very complicated life since the beginning, and after everything that happened last season, I was already excited to see where they were going next. Then I watched the Season 3 trailer, and apparently we’re just going to stress me out immediately.
First of all, I KNEW there was something more to Ben Grant when he showed up in the Season 2 finale.
It wasn’t anything Amy did when she met him. She couldn’t remember him. Amy lost eight years of her memory after the car accident, so as far as she knew, this was just a doctor she had apparently met somewhere before.
It was Ben.
There was something about the way HE acted when he said he knew her. He wasn’t saying much, but I remember watching him and thinking, There is more to this. He knows her better than he’s letting on. I didn’t know what the hell had happened between them. I just knew there was something.
So when I watched the official Season 3 trailer from FOX and realized I WAS RIGHT!?! I knew it!
Ben and Amy have a past, and whatever happened between them was a whole lot more than him simply meeting her once or twice.
And now Amy’s memories are coming back. That has been happening here and there since the beginning of the show, and it happened more often last season. Now those memories are coming faster, and some of them involve Ben.
That part has me really excited because Amy always remembers eventually. It may take a while. It may come back in pieces. But sooner or later, something clicks. So Ben can tell Amy whatever he wants about their past right now. Eventually, she’s going to remember it for herself.
Sir, you might want to start running.
I Already Don’t Trust Ben
Blair Underwood is spectacular, and I’m going to enjoy watching him piss me off all season.
Because Ben? I’m already watching you.
The trailer has him questioning Amy professionally. He doesn’t come right out and say, “Amy has a TBI and shouldn’t be a doctor,” but that is absolutely what I took from what he was saying. And that immediately pissed me off.
Great. We have a new Richard.
We already did this. I watched Amy spend two seasons fighting to get her life and career back. She didn’t just walk back into that hospital after the accident and have everybody hand her everything because she wanted it. She had to prove herself over and over and over again.
And she DID.
The people at Westside have watched her relearn years of medical knowledge, treat patients, make mistakes, recover, grow and prove that she belongs there. Ben hasn’t seen any of that.
He’s walking into a hospital where these people have spent two years watching Amy rebuild her life and career, and suddenly his opinion about her ability to do her job is supposed to carry all this weight?
No.
And if he comes into Westside and immediately starts raising concerns about Amy, I would hope somebody eventually stops and asks another question: What exactly is this man’s history with her?
Because we now know there IS history. And if you’re going to start messing with Amy’s career while conveniently leaving out the fact that you had some kind of relationship with her? I’m going to have a problem with you.
So Here Is My Prediction
I’m putting this in writing before the season starts because I want receipts when we get to the finale.
I think Ben is going to be the bad guy this season. Maybe not a mustache-twirling evil villain, but I absolutely think he is going to be Amy’s main antagonist.
My prediction is that Ben and Amy had a real relationship sometime during those eight years she can’t remember.
And judging by what we’ve seen of the Amy from those missing years, I have another prediction.
Amy did Amy.
Maybe Ben thought they were in love. Maybe they actually were in love. Maybe Amy broke his heart. Maybe she did something awful to him.
I don’t know yet.
But I think whatever happened between them left Ben pissed off, and now he has walked back into Amy’s life carrying baggage she doesn’t even remember packing.
He worked well with everyone when he showed up in the Season 2 finale. He can walk into Westside as the charming, talented doctor everybody likes and trusts. Then he starts questioning Amy.
I think it will begin with concerns about her professionally. Her memory. Her TBI. Whether she should be doing what she’s doing.
And I think it’s going to escalate.
I’m calling it now: before this season is over, I think Ben will try to get Amy removed from her position, fired or possibly even threaten her ability to practice medicine.
And if I’m right about their romantic history, then somebody better eventually point out that this supposedly professional concern is coming from a man with a very personal history with the woman he’s trying to take down.
Maybe I’m completely wrong. We’ll come back to this at the end of the season and find out.
But right now?
New Richard.
I’m calling it.
And Then There’s Michael
Because apparently Amy doesn’t have enough going on.
Michael was already struggling with his feelings for Amy last season, and this one is complicated for me because I actually understand him.
Michael isn’t just looking at his ex-wife and suddenly deciding he wants her again. After Amy’s accident, pieces of the woman he originally married came back to the surface. That’s the Amy Michael misses.
Their marriage fell apart over the years as Amy changed. Now he’s looking at her and seeing so much of the woman he fell in love with all those years ago, and I can understand how that would mess with his head.
There are moments when I genuinely feel bad for him. Imagine losing the person you fell in love with while they’re still standing right in front of you, getting divorced, moving on, and then suddenly seeing pieces of that person come back.
I get it, Michael. I really do.
But no.
Because I love Amy and Jake way too damn much.
Amy and Jake Are Endgame. I Said What I Said.
I LOVE these two together. And it’s more than chemistry for me. There is something about the way Jake loves Amy that gets me.
Jake knew Amy before the accident. More importantly, he knew the Amy she hid from everybody else.
Everybody else saw the brilliant, difficult, hard-ass doctor Amy had become. Jake got to see behind that. He knew there was another Amy underneath all of it because she let him see her.
Then the accident happened and everything changed. Amy lost eight years of her life. She wasn’t exactly the woman Jake knew anymore. She had to figure out who she was while everyone around her remembered things about her that she couldn’t remember herself. And Jake had to get to know her again too.
That’s the part that gets me.
He did. He relearned Amy. And after all of it, he still loved her.
How am I NOT supposed to root for that?
Michael misses the Amy he married. Ben apparently knows the Amy from the years she can’t remember. But Jake knew the real Amy underneath everything before the accident, and then he got to know the woman she became afterward.
And it was still love.
That’s why they’re endgame for me.
And yes, I think Jake makes Amy a better person. Not because she needs him to fix her. Amy is perfectly capable of doing that work herself. He brings out something in her.
He makes her softer without making her weak. He sees through her bullshit. And he knows there is a good person underneath all that Amy attitude because he saw her when she wasn’t showing that person to everybody else.
I think she’s good for him too. They just fit.
After watching everything they’ve gone through, seeing them finally find their way back to each other made me happy. So naturally I watched this trailer thinking, Don’t you dare.
We JUST got them back.
Michael can have his feelings. Ben can bring whatever eight-year-old romantic baggage he’s apparently been carrying around. But Amy and Jake belong together.
Please, Doc. I’m begging you. Do not screw this up.
Season 3, I’m Ready
So that’s where I stand before the first episode even airs.
I am ridiculously happy Amy and Jake are back together. I understand why Michael’s feelings for Amy have resurfaced, even though I don’t want them back together. I knew Ben was hiding something about his history with Amy, and now I’m dying to know exactly what happened between them.
And I am very suspicious of Dr. Ben Grant.
I think whatever happened between him and Amy during those missing eight years is personal. I think he’s still pissed about it. And I think he’s going to spend this season hiding some very personal motives behind supposedly professional concerns about Amy.
Those are my predictions. They are officially in writing.
So when the Season 3 finale rolls around, we’ll come back here and see whether I was completely full of shit… or whether I get to scream, “I KNEW IT!” at my television.
Considering I already knew there was something more to Ben when he showed up in the Season 2 finale? I’m feeling pretty good about my chances.
Doc Season 3 premieres September 22 on FOX and streams the next day on Hulu.
Amy and Jake, please stay together.
Ben Grant?
I’m watching you.
