Crazy Ex Girlfriend ‘s latest episode “Josh and I Work On A Case” had attorney Rebecca Bunch working on a litigation case involving apartment complex residents pursuing a claim against the building owners regarding a water issue.
My two favorite characters are Rebecca and Paula, played to perfection by Rachel Bloom and Donna Lynne Champlin. These ladies are buddies both personally and professionally. Rebecca is an attorney at Whitefeather & Associates and Paula is her paralegal.
There has been much discussion on Crazy Ex Girlfriend regarding the amazing songs (Have you brought the soundtrack yet?) and episodes. But no one as far as I know has talked about an aspect of the show that I feel adds to the Rebecca/Paula relationship: Their law firm dynamic.
As a former paralegal who has worked at both small and large law firms that handled personal injury, medical malpractice and worker’s compensation cases, I can tell you that the paralegal/attorney relationship is extremely important. It is built on trust and reliance.
In Crazy Ex Girlfriend, we see Paula and Rebecca spend a lot of time talking about Rebecca’s current ‘Josh drama’. There is very little time actually going over work files. However, Rebecca has been seen winning several high profile cases for Whitefeather and Associates, including last night huge water claim with a million dollar award. I believe that Rebecca’s legal prowess and Paula’s research support have contributed to these wins. Do we need to seeing them pouring over litigation documents? Trust me, we don’t. This work often is tedious. Though I think Rachel Bloom and the crack song writers could create an interesting and fun song and dance sequence.
If my experiences at law firms had been as fulfilling as I believe Paula is, I might have remained a paralegal. Crazy Ex Girlfriend has shown that legal work doesn’t have to bring you down.
