Friday, October 21 is the Season Premiere of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and (sings) “I’m so excited, I’m so excited. I’m about to lose control and I think I like it!”
Okay, so I lack the talent of the writers of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend to come up with an original song. But that won’t stop me from having a song in my heart about the return of this fabulous show. I’ve made no secret that I’m a die-hard fan of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and consider myself fortunate as not only am I a fan but I have the privilege of being able to write about it for several entertainment sites. Additionally, I had the opportunity of interviewing Donna Lynne Champlin (Paula), Gabrielle Ruiz (Valencia) and Rachel Grate (Audra). These talented actresses were a pleasure to speak with. It’s obvious from the way they spoke that they have a deep affection for the show and cast and crew. This love obviously shows in their performances.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is one of those series you think about long after an episode ends. And did I mention the songs? Absolutely brilliant. The soundtracks are available and are definitely worth purchasing.
But the songs are just the icing of this deliciously entertaining cake. This musical dramedy is well written and has the viewer invested in the lives of these characters. Rebecca Bunch’s (Rachel Bloom) journey of self discovery and the people she met along the way (Paula, Valencia, Greg, Darryl and Heather) have helped us learn something about ourselves. Rebecca may have left New York for West Covina to follow Josh (Vince Rodriguez), but in following her heart, she’s grown as a person. Season 2 promises the further growth of Rebecca and the characters we’ve come to care about.
I’m looking forward to seeing what happens in Josh and Rebecca’s romance. Will they stay together? Valencia called it quits with Josh (finally). Now this strong woman can branch out on her own. And whether that includes a new love or not, it doesn’t matter as Valencia is a women who can take care of herself. I’m so glad the powers-that-be had the smart decision to up her to series regular. I want to see more of who Paula is outside of her friendship with Rebecca. And if I get that episode idea I talked to Donna Lynne about during our interview, I’ll be down-right giddy with excitement. Greg and Heather didn’t survive as a couple because of his ‘Rebecca-its’. But maybe they’ll get a second chance at love. And Darryl is a positive representation for the LGBT Community. I want to see more story lines for him as he navigates through his love life. And a return of Rachel Grate as Audra would be great. Regardless of what happens, Season 2 will be here before we know it.
