It’s National Siblings Day. A day to celebrate that special family member in our lives that has always been there for us: our sister or brother.
Our parents may take care and nurture us, but no one is in the trenches as we are growing up and throughout our lives more than our sibling. At times, they may annoy us but when the chips are down, they are in our corner and have our backs and would do anything for us.
And as far as television siblings go, Sam and Dean Winchester (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) have sacrificed more for each other than any other fictional on screen duo that I’ve seen. They have gone to Hell (literally) for each other. From the time Dean Winchester was a little tyke of four, he viewed his most important job as protecting Sam and keeping little bro safe. Their mother Mary (Samantha Smith) had been burned alive on the ceiling by a demon with an interest in Baby Sammy, then 6 months. John had placed the infant in four year old Dean’s arms and said “Take your brother outside as fast as you can.” And since that time, Dean served as not only a big brother to Sam, but also a surrogate mother of sorts. Dean was probably the one who read Sam to sleep, wiped his tears when he hurt himself and comforted him when he had a nightmare. Military man John seemed to be more of the “tough love, boys should be men type.” Plus, he was focused on training his boys to protect themselves against the supernatural and was also fixated on getting revenge against the thing that killed his wife.
So when Sam decided to leave home for college, Dean was at a loss. He probably felt that Sam was deserting him. Their brother relationship was estranged for about two years until Dean showed up at Stanford to drag Sammy back into the hunt with him. Except for a few years apart when either of them spent time in Hell or Purgatory, (where there is obviously no Skype or Face Time) Sam and Dean have been together since 2005. Small quarters such as cheap motel rooms and closed The Impala have tested their patience with each other. But there is no one Dean would put ahead of Sam (he told his brother so in the Season 8 finale “Sacrifice”).
Actors Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles share an close relationship off-screen as well. Cast members have commented how these two are like brothers. They often spend their holidays and vacations together and their spouses and children are close as well. I think the mutual affection and respect the actors share has helped the close bond of Sam and Dean Winchester.
Happy National Siblings Day Sam and Dean! May you continue to fight the good fight together. When Supernatural ends, here’s hoping that if you don’t go out in a fiery blaze of glory, you are old men sitting in rocking chairs together remembering the good, the bad and the ugly while surrounded by your kids and grand kids.
