The music world was sadden to hear of the passing of David Bowie yesterday at the age of 69.
David Bowie was an pioneer of branding as his music and image were reinvented several times throughout his career. He was a larger than life performer who’s style was unmatched.
Bowie’s songs reached out to many people as he wrote about being many different things as though he felt as though he didn’t fit in- was he an astronaut, alien or whatever? His music couldn’t be classified as well as it had influences of rock, jazz and cabaret.
David Robert Jones was born in Brixon, London on January 8, 1947. He failed to establish a pop career in the 1960s but by the 1970s (as David Bowie), he had a single “Starman” from his album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars after creating a flamboyant alter ego, Ziggy Stardust. He also had a pop hit, “Let’s Dance”.
In 1975, David Bowie’s Number One single “Fame” and album Young Americans established him as a top recording artist.
He also had a career as an actor in movies such as The Man Who Fell to Earth and Labyrinth.
I remember listening to Bowie’s songs as a teen in the early 80s and were able to relate to them. As someone who didn’t fit in and felt awkward, I could relate to his themes and lyrics. He touched me and those I knew through his words.
Rest in Peace David Bowie, you will be missed.
