While Cat (Kristin Kreuk) and Vincent (Jay Ryan) continued to pursue the beast bounty hunter and also clear his name in order to get their normal back, Tess (Nina Lisandrello) struggled with the decisions she made as a cop and as a friend. And JT (Austin Basis) proved his love for her.
Tess has always considered herself a good cop with a respect for law and order and doing what’s right. But her involvement in friend Cat’s life with Vincent Keller had caused her to do things she never thought she’d do. She had helped to cover up crimes committed by Cat, Vincent and JT in their attempt to bring down the bad guys involved in the beast conspiracy. But what happens in the episode “The Getaway” made Tess realize that she was not being the cop she always thought she was and wanted to be.

Reporter Grace Rose (Melissa Tang) knew that Catherine Chandler was hiding things from the public about Cat’s husband, fugitive Dr. Vincent Keller. Grace had encouraged Cat to give her an exclusive and she’d protect her as she always protects her sources. Although both she and Vincent had their reservations, Cat agreed to bring Grace in on their secrets. The reveal left Grace Rose dead.
Tess felt extremely guilty about the part she had played in Grace’s death with all the cover-ups. So guilty, she considered resigning as police Captain after talking with ADA Alex Ellis (Mark Tallman). She was ready to hand in her badge when JT convinces her otherwise.
In one of my favorite scenes of the episode, JT tells Tess that she is a great cop and because of her role in the cover-ups, people were alive that wouldn’t have been otherwise. Then and there, JT Forbes proves that whether they are boyfriend and girlfriend or not, he loves her and will put her happiness (and even his freedom) ahead of hers. JT encourages Tess to stop helping them. She should focus on being the kind of cop she wants to be, one who uploads the law regardless of the consequences to her friends. No more cover-ups. And if that means arresting them for their actions (though JT admitted he doesn’t want that to happen), so be it.
Austin Basis and Nina Lisandrello shined in this scene. JT and Tess will always be friends first and JT will never let Tess question herself or her integrity. Love is about making the hard choices for the ones you love.
