Dark #2: Howl is the second comic in the Dark series, each of which focuses on a different legend. This story begins with a howling wind and blows the reader from a life saving journey to a deadly moment of dread.
Howl is set in the Appalachian Mountains, but our main characters are Irish immigrants who have come to America in an attempt to save a dying child. As the wind howls around a widowed father, his mother, and the child, they manage to find refuge in a cabin with a surprisingly Irish host. As Morrigan, the woman in the woods, offers to help the widower work through his pain, the night takes a turn. Alone in her room the howling rises and we learn just how terrifying the banshee of lore truly is.
This story caught me by surprise. I loved the mention of the lore early in the story and then the later appearance of the banshee. The ending was really well done and the banshee evolved so dramatically that I was awestruck. The art not only added a dark and creepy aura to the tale unfolding, but the pin-up gallery work included at the end was wonderful. I’m really looking forward to seeing which creatures appear in the coming issues of Dark.
