Ava Jerome was a woman tortured by guilt and remorse. Her daughter Kiki (Hayley Erin) had been murdered. And worse Kiki’s killer was Ryan Chamberlain, the man Ava fell in love with when she believed he was his twin brother Dr. Kevin Collins (also Lindstrom).
Her guilt came from the knowledge she and her daughter were estranged at the time of Kiki’s death and also that she (Ava) was indirectly responsible for Kiki being murdered. A sociopath’s mind is a twisted place. After she talked of her daughter’s betrayal (Kiki slept was Ava’s then boyfriend Dr. Griffin Munro) and how she’d be better off without her, Ryan reasoned that by killing Kiki he was actually giving Ava what she wanted. He had no idea what love really meant, Chamberlain didn’t fathom murdering a mother’s child would give her pain and that there was nothing Kiki could have done that would make Ava want her dead.
Ms. Jerome’s plan to lure the presumed dead Ryan back to Port Charles was a stroke of genius. Knowing how jealous he’d be to see she’d move on with other man (his twin brother no less), did the trick. Ryan returned to town and the confrontation began. Ryan assumed Ava was lying when she insisted she was happy he came back; Kevin was nothing more than a poor substitute for the man she really loved: Ryan. In order to test her truthfulness, Ryan wanted Ava to tell him how she felt about him killing Kiki. Ava assured Ryan that although she grieved Kiki her daughter wasn’t the most important person in the world to her, he was. In the end all that was between she and Kiki was hurt and anger. But with Ryan, there was love as she knew he’d do anything for her. Bait. Hook. Trap. Ryan fell for Ava’s lies. Her plan worked, now was time for the big reveal and retribution. Ava pulled a gun out on Ryan and told him how she and Kevin played him. How could she love her daughter’s killer? She would offer him a slow, painful death. Ava wanted Ryan to feel the same fear Kiki had in her final moments.
The scenes between Ava and Ryan showed the depths of Maura West and Jon Lindstrom’s talents. Ava was a mother seeking revenge and justice for her daughter. She didn’t care she was in a face-off with a serial killer. And not only does Jon Lindstrom masterfully convinces you he is a psychopath, his Ryan is entirely different from his Kevin. Facial gestures and voice inflections give you the impression you’re watching two separate actors. As a real life twin, I offer my highest praise in Jon Lindstrom performance.
Daytime veterans West and Lindstrom are General Hospital ‘s heavy hitters. Both are Daytime Emmy Nominees, with West winning previously for Daytime Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. I see more Emmy nominations in their future.
