Interview with Avaah Blackwell from @kleffnotes

I had the chance to chat with Avaah Blackwell. She will be reprising her role on Star Trek Discovery in the recently debuted third season of the series. Thank you to Avaah Blackwell for answering all of my questions.

Could you tell our readers a little about yourself?

Hey, thanks for having me. I am currently living in Toronto and feel very lucky to be working on several projects as an actress, stunt performer and model. I enjoy variety, excellence, collaboration, and creativity in my professional life. Growing up in a military family allowed me the opportunity to live in many parts of Canada and much of Europe. Acting was the way I integrated into all of these new communities as a child – drama camps etc. So naturally, it became the way I like to connect with people. My mission is to live life to the fullest, continually grow, and help others when I can. I hope that by embarking on my own path it encourages others to do the same, but regardless, I just want to have the best experiences this life has to offer, and share them with the best people I can find. We all deserve to live a life free to explore ourselves and the world around us.

How would you describe your role on Star Trek: Discovery?

I am what they like to call a “morpher” for the show. Basically if they need someone in a mask, prosthetic or to play a new type of alien /test out a new prosthetic, there is a high chance I am going to get a call. Which is so cool. The character most people know me for is Osnullus (affectionately known as ‘Nolly to some of the crew members and I) who is indeed one of the most mysterious members of the Star Trek: Discovery Bridge crew. Osnullus is a sciences officer, holds the rank of Ensign and often operates the spore drive when Lt. Nilsson (played by Sara Mitich) is completing other tasks. Keep your eyes peeled during season three to discover all the other cool characters I get to play!

What have been some of your favorite experiences working on the show so far?

Well my absolute favorite that I can talk about can be found on the Season 2 Blu Ray Blooper reel. Not going to spoil it too much, however Captain Pike gives Osnullus quite the promotion.

Had you previously been a fan or interested in the Star Trek franchise?

Yes! I am generally a fan of Sci Fi and Action/Adventure. My mom and I used to watch Star Trek TNG and Voyager together when I was little. I was so young that most of it went way over my head, but I loved it all, especially the aliens. I also loved the fact that there was a lady captain (Captain Janeway) on Voyager. Now that I’ve been working on the show I have become a much bigger fan too, there are so many great frontiers to be explored within the Star Trek Universe, one can really get lost in it, while learning a lot about themselves and humanity.

What was it like performing in the Winnipeg Fringe Festival?

Wow, blast from the past! It was really fun! The group I was performing with had two shows at two different venues that year. “Bad Girls: Sunny Side Up ” was the comedy show we had, and it won “Best of Fest” for our venue which was a really cool experience. The audience in Winnipeg was also so much fun. Very cool people. To promote the show, we (the cast and director) went out in character to talk to people on the streets. My character was a rowdy pirate brigandess with a penchant for beer – with this in mind we decided to hit the beer gardens – where we were promptly kicked out because they thought I was actually drunk out of my mind. Needless to say I stated my case in front of the entire crowd at the gardens. My cast mates and director all just went with it, and the show sold out the next day.

Do you have any plans for more improv or comedy work?

Always! Comedy and Improv are my first loves.

Any other projects you’d like to discuss?

Be sure to keep an eye out for the EFC Movie! A female MMA sport drama film. It’s going to be very cool!
