For Terri Garber’s Birthday: Reflecting On Why She Remains One of My Favorite Actresses via @stacyamiller85 @terrigarber1228 #NorthandSouth #Dynasty

Today is Terri Garber’s birthday. In addition to wishing her a happy one, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on why she remains one of my favorite actresses for thirty-five years.

Before ABC aired the miniseries North and South in 1985, I’d never heard of Terri Garber. But after Episode 3 (Terri’s first appearance as Ashton), she would forever earn a place in my mind and heart as one of my top (and favorite) actresses. Her interpretation of the scheming and bewitching Main sister captivated fans of the John Jakes novel. Every time I watch Terri in North and South, I marvel at her talent. She gave the character a Scarlett O’ Hara (Gone With The Wind’s heroine) flavor, but added her own special ingredient for a performance to savor. Terri stood out in a cast full of amazing actors. Viewers loved to hate Ashton. To paraphrase Mae West: When Ashton was good, she was very good, but when she was bad, she was better. My late mom loved Terri as Ashton and said of Garber’s acting “She’s really good…she’ll go far.”

Besides Ashton, I’ve seen Terri put her stamp on many different film, daytime and primetime characters. After North and South, made a point to follow her career. I watched her pre-North and South projects daytime drama Texas and the movie No Man’s Land.

I was pleased when Terri was cast on Dynasty. My twin sister Tracy was especially excited that Terri shared her first scene with Gordon Thomson (Tracy’s favorite actor), who played her cousin Adam. Though I wish Leslie had reached great heights especially in the hands of an actress of Terri’s caliber. I often wondered why the writers made Leslie make the choices she did as I felt it boxed her in a hole she was never able to climb out of.

One of the things I like about Terri Garber is she appreciates the opportunities she was given in her career. She values her fans and takes the time to interact with them on the North and South A Novel For Television group on Facebook. She knows this project is special to them and that they enjoy hearing her memories from her time as Ashton.

Additionally, she is a devoted wife and mother as well as a cherished sister and daughter. Family means everything to Terri Garber. This is a quality I admire.

A plus for me to being on social media was the chance to tell Terri of my love of North and South and thank her for her contributions to this epic miniseries. I had the pleasure of speaking with her for an interview:

Terri and her sister Lisa are the founders of Sister’s Alchemy a company that makes natural soap products. To learn more, check out the website:

So on your birthday Terri, my wish for you is that you continue to enjoy all life has to offer. I thank you for the numerous gifts you’ve given fans over the years with your performances.

Here is a poem by The Nerdy Girl Express poet and writer Tracy Diane Miller:

The fire inside her
With purpose it roars
To ignite with determination
As dreams might soar
She is not a silhouette of a forgotten past
She is not a lost memory that will fade all too fast
For that fire inside her
Long will it grow
To light her future
Creativity will still show
She has inhabited the lives of characters
A dalliance with fantasy
Is reality stranger than fiction
That remains to be seen
For Ashton or Leslie or by the many names she has been called
Do you know the best name that suits her after all
It is Terri
Her name for the fire inside her
With flames to speak
With purpose it roars
Not angry but proudly to tell you why Terri is unique
This daughter
This wife
This sister
This mother
This friend
Who gives her heart
Her love without end
The fire inside her
A Muse will admire
Her courageous spirit
Is destined to inspire
So with the food that words might provide
Then a verse is well fed
To fully emerge in the moments ahead
Ready to speak
Unlike the fire inside her that roars
A poem is quiet when in her heart to soar
With joy as it conveys
All the best to you Terri as you celebrate your birthday
