The Flash returned from its winter hiatus with Barry facing a new villain and contemplating the next step in his relationship with Patty.

Although Barry has his hands full batting meta humans and learning how he can defeat Zoom, he takes some time to focus on his growing romance with Patty Spivot. Barry faces the dilemma of whether he should tell her the truth about being The Flash. I must admit, I really like Barry and Patty together. Grant Gustin and Shantel Vansanten have amazing chemistry. Their scenes together have an awkward, sweet quality about them that makes them more realistic that many of the couples on television.

But as The Flash isn’t about a hero’s love life (save that for Arrow and Oliver Queen), Barry learns from Cisco about The Turtle, a meta human that may be the key to defeating Zoom. You see, The Turtle has the ability to stop everyone’s speed around him. If Zoom is slowed down, it would give Barry the chance to catch and stop him. However, The Turtle can slow Barry down too so it’s back to the drawing board for Team Speedy (Sorry, I guess Cisco’s rubbing off on me).
In a less exciting but emotional subplot, Joe comes face to face with son Wally West and gets an earful from the son he recently learned he had. Kudos to Jesse Martin and Keiynan Lonsdale for their performances in these powerful scenes.

Overall, “Potential Energy” was an enjoyable outing. I still have an issue with Zoom. He wants Barry’s speed so he can…what? Take over the world could be the simply answer but viewers have to yet learned his motivations.
