Tonight’s Houdini and Doyle episode is all about alien invasions so I thought, before the episode airs, that I would share some interesting facts about the history of London and aliens to get you excited for tonight.
You might be thinking aliens in London in the late 1800’s, early 1900’s is preposterous, but there is actually a well known invasion that took place in 1897. The country of England was overwhelmed by alien forces who landed in cylindrical tubes. They might have taken time to acclimate to their new environment, but once they built heat rays not even the British government could handle them. Society almost moved underground, but the aliens were unexpectedly destroyed by some sort of disease that humans were immune to.
Okay, so that event I’m talking about didn’t happen in real life, but it did happen in the story War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells. His story was released in a serialized format for the first time in 1897 and then was released in hardback a year later. The story is more detailed than my very brief synopsis, but shows aliens in the heart of London. This novel has continued to endure throughout popular culture for years. One reason for this might be the radio broadcast that happened on October 30th 1938. Orson Welles gave a dramatic performance of H. G. Wells’ story, which altered the location of the plot to the United States. During this performance the CBS Studios were told that people were actually panicking that an invasion had taken place. There were even rumors of suicide, though none of them were ever proven. You can find the original broadcast on YouTube if you want to hear just what that night sounded like.
I wonder if Mr. Wells will make an appearance in tonight’s episode of Houdini and Doyle. He seems like the perfect person to help them solve this mysterious case.
