TNT re-aired the Supernatural Season 7 episode “Shut Up, Dr. Phil” February 8 and it made me think how much the show needs The Starks in Season 13.
The War of the Roses was never so much fun than the battle between witches Don Stark and wife Maggie in the Supernatural Season 7 Episode “Shut, Up Dr. Phil.”
Buffy The Vampire Slayer fan favorites James Marsters (Spike) and Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia) played the bewitching couple to the absolute delight of fans. When strange murders began happening in the town of Prosperity, Indiana, Sam and Dean Winchester (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) went to investigate and found themselves in the middle of a domestic spat of epic witchy proportions. Maggie was tired of husband Don’s affairs and decided to put a stop to them permanently. But instead of hex bags, Dean uncovered old Romanian coins were the calling cards. At first, the Winchesters thought they were dealing with a Samantha Stevens but Don was no innocent Darren. They soon learned that there was double magic at play and two witches were more deadly than one.
But for fans, The Starks were one of the more fun villains. Sure, they were powerful and killed people but their domestic squabbles made for some humorous moments in a season about people eating monsters. It was particularly amusing to see Sam and Dean as marriage counselors. Their advice to the couple landed them flat on their asses (courtesy of Don and Maggie) more than once. And Dean surrounded by the swarm of bees was good for a chuckle.
Fortunately the writers decided that despite their crimes, The Starks would live. This was great news for viewers like myself with hope for their return. Now that Sam and Dean have more experience in handling entities with family disagreements (think God and sister Amara), if The Starks were to return and got into it again, it would be no problem for them this time. Plus, Don did help with the Leviathan problem by casting a spell immobilizing the creature. Sam and Dean could use a witch (or two) in their corner and Supernatural could definitely use characters like Don and Maggie Stark.
Here’s hoping that The Powers That Be reach back into their Characters of Supernatural past and reward fans by allowing Don and Maggie Stark to cast a spell on viewers once again.
