Some very unfortunate things are coming to Netflix and I’m here to prepare you for the sadly sinister series dropping on Friday the 13th of this week. Now my dear friends dry your eyes and try not to weep for I present to you a means of preparation for the oncoming despair.
On January 13th, a Friday of course, Netflix if dropping the first season of their original series, A Series of Unfortunate Events. I grew up with this series and was delighted to hear that the woefully wonderful books would be brought to life again. In all my excitement I have been thinking of ways to help others get into the spirit for this sad series.
Start Re-Reading the Book Series: I know that one is a bit of a stretch with it being Wednesday and the show debuting on Friday, but I have done some research and I think it’s mostly doable. I believe that the first season will be focusing on books 1-4, which means you only need to read four total books before Friday. Okay, that might seem like a lot, but if you’ve already read the series you could totally skim them and still be alright. Now if I’m wrong about the season only covering four books, I’m terribly sorry, but you could get a good start on them.
Listen to the Audio Books: These might take a bit more time than reading the books, but the audio books are great! When I was a kid my mom used to play them in the car and not only do you get to hear someone read the books to you, but depending on which book you are on sometimes you get to hear Lemony Snickett himself. Daniel Handler reads some of the audio books and when he stopped recording them they hired Tim Curry, which was epic! He makes everyone sound so nefarious. The music in them is also eerily cool, which leads me to my next point.
Listen to The Tragic Treasury: When the audio books were created The Gothic Archies created music based on each of the books. This music plays between each chapter and after they were all recorded they released a cd with the full versions of all the songs, plus a bonus song that was never used in an audio book.
Watch the Movie: Now I know not everyone liked the original movie and it does do some interesting plot stuff, like go from book three back to book one at the end, but it is an adaptation of the books. I saw it in theaters and I used to watch it randomly, even though I know it isn’t prefect. This can help you get in the zone for the new series and add to the excitement you are already feeling.
I’ll be binging the series Friday night and I am going to do a review video of it to share with all of you. Let me know what you think of the series after Friday, I look forward to hearing what people have to say.
