Tomorrow’s Valentine’s Day, which means that today is Galentine’s Day! For those of you who might not have watched Parks and Recreation, the day before Valentine’s Day is Galentine’s Day. It’s a holiday invented by Leslie Knope to spend celebrating all of her female friends. To celebrate the day I wanted to focus on the Galentine’s Day episodes of Parks and Rec.
The first appearance of this holiday was in Season 2 Episode 16, which was titled “Galentine’s Day.” In the episode we see Leslie’s annual brunch event with all of the women in her life. She explains what the holiday is and while they are having a conversation about the loves of their life she invents a plan. Leslie wants to reunite her mom with the lifeguard she fell in love with after he saved her from drowning one summer. She tells the story of her mother’s lost love to Justin and the two decide to find a way to reunite the pair on Valentine’s Day. Once they find the lifeguard, Leslie doubts that they should continue with their plan, but Justin insists. This proves to be a contentious point in Leslie and Justin’s relationship and it turns out this isn’t the only relationship on the rocks. Ann and Mark are celebrating their first Valentine’s Day and no matter what Ann says she seems withdrawn.
Galentine’s Day makes a second appearance in Season 6 Episode 17 with the exact same episode title. Leslie winds up throwing an impromptu Galentine’s Day party to try and find a new best friend. Ann has been gone for two months and after their weekly phone call fell through Leslie fixates on trying to find someone new to spend time with. She brings together April, Donna, Shauna Malwae-Tweep, Ethel Beavers, and Evelyn. Throughout she asks them questions about themselves and when her guests realize she’s taking notes almost all of them leave. Leslie is left with Shauna as her new best friend, until Ann calls. She’s just given birth to her daughter and Leslie rushes to be with her. She reveals to Ann that she misses being able to spend time with her everyday and Ann tells Leslie that even though it isn’t the same sort of relationship Donna and April care about her too. When she returns to Pawnee Leslie apologizes for what she did at the Galentine’s Day Brunch and tells them she looks forward to spending more time with them. Outside of the main plot Ben is working to get a tent for Unity Day.
You can find Parks and Rec on a variety of sites, I personally watch it on Netflix. I hope you have a wonderful Galentine’s Day and a lovely Valentine’s Day!
