I have written a number of reviews connected to The Chair series from Alterna Comics. This horror series focuses on a man named Sullivan who has been incarcerated in a prison that is such a hellish environment that you will be shocked at the conditions he finds himself in.
Previously I reviewed the feature film based on The Chair, which I actually watched before reading the entire series. This series blends both psychological and physical horror elements as The Warden plays out his sick fantasies on the prisoners under his watch. In this issue there is a rather graphic scene, but while in the film this scene is visible, in the comic it is merely alluded to with dialogue emerging from a darkened doorway.
This is definitely a series for mature readers only, but it is something that is a must read for horror fans. The art also adds to the frightening elements of this series with the black and white art heightening the level of shadows that shroud Sullivan and the prison. This series will keep you guessing until the very end and what you learn will shock you. I would also like to mention that the use of dialogue, especially the biblical quotes placed on the walls and floors, creates a very dynamic textual experience for the reader.
