On the Friday, June 29 episode of ABC’s General Hospital, Elizabeth Webber (Rebecca Herbst) was surprised when she opened her door and saw that her grade school friend Terry looked much different from the way she remembered him when they were twelve.
In the episode, Elizabeth talked with Drew (Billy Miller) and Franco (Roger Hogwarth) about how she and Terry were soulmates when they were growing up in Boulder prior to Liz moving to Port Charles. Husband-to-be Franco was jealous as he listened to Elizabeth’s tween memories of Terry and how they were inseparable as kids. Franco commented that maybe Terry was interested in rekindling the old flame with Liz before she tied the knot. After Drew and Franco left, the door bell rang and to Elizabeth’s surprise the attractive woman that greeted her turned out to be Terry.
Cassandra James, who revealed in 2016 that she was transgender, makes her daytime debut as General Hospital’s Terry. This should be an important story line for the long running ABC daytime drama as it will hopefully educate viewers on being transgender. In the community of Port Charles, it will be interesting to see how Terry is accepted by the residents. More importantly, how will Elizabeth deal with this new change to her old friend? From the stories she told about Terry, the two probably shared secrets as children. But from the look on Liz’s face when she opened the door and Terry greeted her, Elizabeth obviously had no idea that Terry was now a woman. As often happens even for the closest of childhood relationships, you lose touch. How will Liz feel that Terry kept such a big secret about her life from her?
As Terry’s story is explored on General Hospital, we will hopefully learn about acceptance and how transgenders are treated in society. I hope that the material will be presented in an open and honest way so that viewers will take away something from watching Terry’s journey. I look forward to seeing how this story line progresses and applaud General Hospital for casting Cassandra James to bring Terry to life.
Cassandra tweeted on June 30 on how excited she was on playing Terry:
Welcome to General Hospital Cassandra!
