Wishing #GH ‘s @MauriceBenard Happy Birthday via @stacyamiller85 @GeneralHospital #GeneralHospital

General Hospital’s Port Charles wouldn’t be the same without mob boss/coffee importer Sonny Corinthos. March 1 is the birthday of the gifted actor who brings Sonny to life on screen, Maurice Benard.

Actor Maurice Benard has played Sonny since 1993 and won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2003.  Sonny Corinthos had a difficult childhood due to an abusive stepfather.  But he had the determination to overcome his background and became a powerful figure in Port Charles. He is royal to family and friends and will do whatever is necessary to protect them.  He harbors a lot of guilt from the casualties suffered because of “his business.” Sonny has been married several times but the love of his life is Carly (Laura Wright).  The couple has experienced a turbulent on-again, off-again relationship.  But whatever problems they face, Sonny and Carly always find their way back to each other.

In a case of reel life imitating real life, Sonny was diagnosed as bipolar just like Bernard.  Maurice Benard has helped to educate on the illness, advocating treatment in order to maintain good mental health.

Prior to his role as Sonny, Maurice Benard played Nico Kelly on the now defunct ABC soap opera All My Children.

In addition to acting on daytime dramas, Benard also appeared in numerous film projects, including playing Desi Arnaz in the television movie Lucy & Desi: Before the Laughter. He appears in the film The Ghost and The Whale.

Recently, Benard played mobster John Gotti in the Lifetime movie Victoria Gotti: My Father’s Daughter.

Thank you for your contributions to daytime television in playing General Hospital’s Sonny these last twenty-five years. Your powerful performances have helped make this long running soap worth watching.
