Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure was recognized for its musical achievement by receiving a 2020 Daytime Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Music Direction and Composition.

What makes a good story? People have a different opinion on what is a key aspect to telling a good story. But all can agree, a good story is one where it stirs emotions in the reader. Or in the case of a film or television, the viewer. You want to have strong characters and defined motivation. Who are these people? Why should we care about them?

Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure expanded upon the Rapunzel fairy tale by giving us a heroine with unstoppable spunk and determination as well as adding new characters to her universe. This Rapunzel refused to let anyone or anything jeopardize her kingdom of Corona. This princess would let her hair down in a fight and would never back down. Defeat wasn’t an option.

Adding to a good story is great music. It accentuates the plot and ups the ante giving the story more passion. Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure has some of the best music I’ve ever heard in an animated series. It was the music that drew me in and gave the characters more meaning.

The title song “Wind in My Hair” expresses who Rapunzel is. She has a yest for life and an excitement for the world around her. Check out these lyrics:

‘Cause I got the wind in my hair
And a gleam in my eyes
And an endless horizon
I got a smile on my face
And I’m walking on air
And everything life oughta be
It’s all gonna happen to me out there
And I’ll find it, I swear
With the wind in my hair

Throughout Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure (formerly Tangled: The Series), each song took us on a road of self discovery for these characters. Hope. Uncertainty. Confidence. Insecurity. Anger. Happiness. Rapunzel, Eugene, Cassandra and Varian conveyed these feelings in their musical pieces. “Next Stop Anywhere,” “Let Me Make You Proud,” “Ready As I’ll Ever Be, “Nothing Left To Lose,” Emmy nominated “Waiting In The Wings,” and “Crossing The Line,” are the tunes that spring to mind.

As sung by Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, Eden Espinosa and Jeremy Jordan, these tunes had a Broadway feel. I found myself singing along as I watched the action unfold. The music in Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure had it all.

Who didn’t smile as Rapunzel took off to find her destiny to “Next Stop Anywhere?”  Or cry for Varian when he wanted to make his father Quirin proud in “Let Me Make You Proud and its reprise?” Who didn’t want Cassandra to have her moment to shine when she sang “Waiting In The Wings?” Who didn’t mourn when Cassandra tore hers and Rapunzel’s friendship apart by “Crossing The Line?” Who didn’t want Varian to convince Cassandra to give up her dark path by reminding her she had everything to lose in “Nothing Left To Lose?” Who didn’t want all these characters to have the best “Life After Happily Ever After?”

Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure musical composition and direction changed the way many people who’ve seen it will look at music in an animated series. I hope to see it take home an Emmy (or Emmys?) for its achievement.

Glenn Slater, Alan Menken and Kevin Kliesch deserve the highest accolades for bringing us this music.
