Dancing Deadites and a Singing Ash, Yes Please!

Today is Halloween, and this year it’s not just my favorite holiday, but also the premiere day for Ash vs Evil Dead on Starz. 9 pm est everybody, if you can you should totally watch it, mostly because I can’t and I need someone to tell me how amazing it is. All the sad faces over here, but I just don’t get the channel and won’t be able to find a way to get it in time to see the show. On a happier note though, it is the day to discuss my favorite piece of the Evil Dead franchise, Evil Dead: The Musical. Yes, there is a musical and I can tell you first hand that it is ridiculously hilarious and you need to find a way to watch or listen to it.

The musical blends together primarily the first two Evil Dead movies, with smatterings of dialogue and some scenes taken from Army of Darkness. Act One opens with Ash, Cheryl, Scott, Linda, and Shelly heading out to spend Spring Break in a cabin in the woods. The opening song, titled Cabin in the Woods, is probably my favorite song, mostly because I get it stuck in my head a lot. I have totally just sung it for the sake of singing it in public, quietly of course so that people don’t think I’m too crazy. It’s just so catchy, here’s a link to a version of the song on YouTube so you can get it stuck in your head too, (Totally not a trick to get you to unleash deadites, nope just a song link). The first act continues with The Necronomicon being found and demons being unleashed, much like in the original movie. By the end of the act Ash is on the way to having a chainsaw hand and the professor’s daughter appears wondering where her father is.

Act Two follows a bit of Evil Dead 2, but characters are given extra backstories and lines from Army of Darkness are added, with a bit of a twist. It’s really fun to try and spot the lines while you are watching the show. This act ends with Ash back at S Mart and he winds up saving the shoppers from a deadite attack. The whole thing is just full of camp and hilarity. Watching it is just so great. Last Halloween weekend I was able to go see a production of it and it was wonderful! Some performances even have splash zones and the cast will splash people with fake blood during the gorier scenes. My showing they just squirted light pink soap on people, which was the only thing that was a bit of a let down. I had dressed to get covered in blood, but somehow wound up cleaner than when I went in.

If you can find a way to see this musical you totally should, especially if you are a fan of the Evil Dead movies. Even if you aren’t a fan of the movies it’s just really funny. If you can’t see the musical YouTube does have a lot of the songs so you could check out more than just Cabin in the Woods. I hope you enjoy Ash vs Evil Dead and I would love to hear what you think of the show either in the comments or on Twitter, ours is @thenerdygirlexp and mine is @kleffnotes.
