A couple of weeks ago I discussed how terrifying ventriloquist dummies are and I had hoped to do another “things Katherine is afraid of” article before Halloween, but over at The Nerdy Girl Express Halloween we’ll just be spooky all year round. Today I will terrify and intrigue you with something I think is too creepy to keep in my room, though you might think they are totally okay.
If you haven’t guessed from the picture and the sort of punny title, I’m going to talk to you about why I am creeped out by mirrors. Yes, you read that right mirrors, those nifty reflective things that keep you from leaving the house with food in your teeth. I’m not saying I don’t use mirrors because I totally do. I mean I don’t want to look like a complete mess before I leave the house, though mirrors don’t always help with that. I can comb my hair, but still a rat’s nest will appear before I make it out the door. It’s like magic, crappy not good for anyone magic.
Okay, less hair, more mirrors. For some reason I’ve never liked having a mirror in my bedroom. I can’t sleep if there is one facing me, which was a huge problem where I used to live. Each room had a closet with a mirror attached to the front of the door. I couldn’t take it out, so I literally left my closet door open all the time so that the mirror was facing the wall and not my bed. Something about mirrors just makes me leery. I just feel like they’re watching me, I don’t know why, but I just feel like something in the mirror could pop out and grab me.
Some of you might be thinking that I have this phobia because of the urban legend, Bloody Mary, and admittedly that creeps me out, but I was spooked by mirrors long before I heard that story. I just don’t trust them, I know they are inanimate objects, but something about them just gives me the shivers. I am exceptionally creeped out by the Supernatural episode from Season One about Bloody Mary though, I still can’t watch that one at night. If you haven’t seen it, you should do it, but just know there is a creepy girl and she crawls out of a mirror in a room full of mirrors. I totally refused to see Oculus, the movie with Karen Gillan, even though I think she’s wonderful. The mirror makes her think a light bulb is an apple! I literally couldn’t even watch the previews without getting freaked out.
I do have a quick funnyish story about mirrors to end this article, which seems really surprising. Okay, so in the winter when I was in like third grade a bunch of girls did the Bloody Mary thing in the girls bathroom. I wasn’t there, but I heard them talking about it the next day. During some random break I happened to be in a stall when a group of these girls came in to the bathroom, I heard one of them turn the faucet on and scream that Bloody Mary was coming and they all ran out. I came out of the stall and turned on the water to wash my hands and the water was pink, not vibrant pink, just a really light pinky color. Apparently these girls had been told the water would turn to blood if they had summoned Bloody Mary and they thought that’s what the pink water meant. It actually just meant that they had been working on the pipes and added some water softener stuff the night before, much less scary.
