Do you like curling up with a good book and relaxing the day away with the likes of William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and Virginia Woolf? Then Joelle Herr has the perfect new addition to your literary collection. Her activity book, A Far, Far Better Thing to Do: A Lit Lover’s Activity Book, is full of puzzles, mazes, and even some games you could share with your friends at your next book club.
In her book, Herr gives lit lovers some perfect ways to wile away the hours that are brought to life with the illustrations of Lindsey Sprinks. You can color your own version of the Land of Oz, connect the dots to bring Henry David Thoreau’s cabin to life, match the characters from some well known stories with their literary sources, and so much more. Some of my favorite activities involved matching a character with their famous exit line and other characters with their professions of love.
There are also a variety of versions of “Marry, Kill, Do” pages that made me chuckle. In case you’re unfamiliar with this game you rank 3 prospective partners by whether you would marry them, kill them, or do them. It has a few other less polite names that you might have already played before. My absolute favorite page was “Spinster: Yay or Nay.” In this activity you have to determine whether a famous female writer ever married. I have often referred to myself jokingly as a spinster and seeing this page brought a huge smile to my face. The section that I think a number of people will enjoy is “What’s Your Pen Name?” and through letter matching you can create your own literary name. Sadly, my initials are a bit boring and I wound up with my own first name as a first name, the trials of being named Katherine in a modern world.
A Far, Far Better Thing to Do provides lit lovers with a wonderful way to spend their time and it’s the perfect thing to bring to your book club or reading group to share with others. Joelle Herr’s ideas blend delightfully with Lindsey Sprinks’ illustrations and should be your go to for some literary themed fun.
