Set two years after the events of the first book in the Code of Rainbow series, the second book subtitled Ancient Barons and the Returned Assassin, starts off with everything seeming normal. That is until Soarame and his friends receive a mysterious threat. From that point forward surprise discoveries continue to emerge and there is so much that will be learned by the end of this story.
Soarame is confronted by the idea of incompatible magic working together when he sees someone work with both fire and water. He is personally working to gain power over his water magic and at the school he continues to grow his own skills. He is also evolving his relationship with his magimal, Snower, who he had hoped to raise like a parent, but has realized that his smart companion sees him more like an equal and friend than a parent. When a mysterious package arrives everything shifts and Soarame must discover who is threatening him, while also working through his own concerns in connection to the fate of the world at large. The student of the institution have their own quest to complete and all of this leads to action packed adventure and magical intrigue.
This addition to the Code of Rainbows series includes elements of romance and shows that the characters are getting older and starting to change their relationship dynamics. The action in this book is amped up by the quest the students are taking part in and we also get to see magimals in actions as they help in the mission. Soarame is also working through many of his own concerns with himself and his magic, which adds a level of normalcy to the magical world. This book perfectly sets up the third volume of the series, which I will also be reviewing. If you enjoy books like Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire this book is the perfect read for you.
