Rational Creatures Seeking Funding for Season 2! Press Release from @kleffnotes

Based on Persuasion, this web series is already off to a great start [JANUARY 26, 2020] Rational Creatures, a modern web series inspired by Jane Austen’s beloved novel Persuasion, aired its first season in the fall of 2019. It will be crowdfunding its
second season on Seed & Spark.
Rational Creatures seeks to explore Austen’s novel from a fresh perspective with a group of LGBTQ+ twenty-something characters making their way through quarter-life crises, all while managing anxiety, chronic illness, and relationships.

The first season, which is comprised of five, three to seven minute episodes, introduces Ana Elías (Kristina Pupo), a modern iteration of Anne Elliot, still living at home working for her family’s business. Captain Wentworth is recognizable in bisexual-and-proud Fred (Peter Giessl), who lives a nomadic lifestyle working as an almost-famous travel writer. Eight years after a tumultuous high school breakup, Ana and Fred are driven back into each other’s lives by chance. With both of them at pivotal moments in their lives, can they confront the choices that lead to heartbreak while fulfilling their individual hopes and dreams, and, just maybe, find a way back to each other?

Rational Creatures is helmed by a group of four women from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, who met and work together over the internet. The team crowdfunded over $4,000 for production of the first season, which took place February 17-21, 2019, in Chicago and Evanston, Illinois. The first season was an official selection of the Minnesota WebFest, where it won the Best of Minnesota award, and was nominated for Best Dramedy, Best Dramatic Ensemble, Best Representation of LGBTQ+ Communities, and Best Representation of Women. Rational Creatures will also be present in a web series spotlight at TGI Femslash in Long Beach, LA in February 2020.

Quotes from the creators about the project:
“We’ve tried to echo Jane’s story in spirit and essentials rather than directly adapting every character and plot point, so there are quite a few differences aside from the obvious modern day setting.” -Hazel Jeffs

“What Austen did best was balance romance and humor with commentary on the social issues of her time, and I think our feminist, diverse take on her story is something she would be excited by!” -Jessamyn Leigh
