Interview with Hallea Jones from @kleffnotes

I had the chance to chat with Hallea Jones about her role in the Netflix Original Series Locke & Key. As someone who loved the comics I was tremendously excited to learn that Netflix would be bringing the world to life. Thank you to Hallea Jones for answering all of my questions.

Could you tell our readers a little about yourself?

I am from Toronto Canada, and I am named after a volcano in Maui, Hawaii – Haleakala! I started performing at a young age but really got into acting in 2018. I am also a singer/songwriter, and have taught myself how to play guitar. My dad is a professional pianist, so I started taking lessons at a young age but stopped for a few years – only getting back into it in 2019. My favourite thing to do is write music and jam with my friends on Monday nights; and any day on a film set is a happy day for me!

How would you describe Locke & Key?

A dark fantastical adventure following a family in the midst of huge change and self exploration. Oh. And there are crazy keys that make normal life seem so boring!

Your character Eden Hawkins is the noted Queen Bee of the town, what was it like playing this character?

Eden and I differ greatly in the sense that I would never say things as horrible as she does, but I was a bit of a Queen Bee in school, so it was very much a channelling of the old Hallea that I really don’t like to associate with. I’ve grown up a lot since high school and realize the importance of being kind, but I love that acting can let us explore parts of ourself that maybe we don’t like or want to associate with.

Had you ever read any of the Locke & Key comics?

Yes! So So good!

What were some of your favorite moments on set?

There are so many, but definitely any time hanging out with the cast. Griffin Gluck and I made music together during our down time, and there was never a dull moment in the Hair and Makeup trailer! Oh, and Petrice and Griffin scaring Emilia, of course! ICONIC!

Are you typically a fan of horror?

No no no!

Which of the keys would you be interested in trying out?

Definitely the Head Key. Although it’s a scary concept, I’d be really interested to see what kind of infrastructure I would have created in my head. I have a feeling it would be super organized, but behind any given door it would be Monica Geller’s (FRIENDS) secret messy closet…

You also are very interested in music, could you speak a bit about some of the songs you’ve written?

I started getting back into music about a year ago at an open mic, and began writing two songs a week to bring every Monday. In the past year I’ve written over 40 songs that have helped me work through personal things in life, and connect with my own experiences in a beautiful way that I never had before. I’m hoping to release some of my music in the spring, but Locke & Key is my primary focus right now, so we’ll see what happens!
