Excerpts from an Unknown Guidebook: Phases of the Moon Book Review from @kleffnotes

Aaron and his grandfather, whom he calls Pap, have a special bond that allows the teenager to shake off some of his feelings of inadequacy every day after school through storytelling. Each day Aaron rushes to Pap’s house and he listens to him tell tales of all different types, but one day when his grandfather isn’t home he suddenly worries that something could be very wrong. Excerpts from an Unknown Guidebook: Book 1: Phases of the Moon establishes a world where stories have power and they can completely change your life.

This young adult novel is the first in a series that will focus on The Folkteller Universe. Aaron learns that Pap is a Folkteller, which means he can wield the power of stories to fend off evil beings, including the frightening Shadow People. When Aaron and his best friend Jake stumble into a different world they learn that there is magic in the world that they had never seen before. There’s inter-dimensional travel, a young love story, and a dedicated grandson and teenage boy on a journey to learn just how truly special he is within the pages of this book.

Phases of the Moon works to introduce the magic and power within The Folkteller Universe and establishes a trio of young people who find themselves growing and changing through the knowledge of this new world. The relationship that Aaron has with his grandfather is very sweet and while there are some bumps along the way within elements of their relationship there is a strong familial bond there. This book is the perfect read for middle school readers and could even read by a younger audience depending on their reading skills. There is some great art throughout the book that adds to the story through the use of shadows. It was a fun and quick read that would keep young readers delighted, especially if they are voracious readers. 1. Great review on such a great read! You really summarized the Folkteller universe perfectly along with the magic of the adventures its leading characters play in this new world. I love the relationship dynamics between Aaron and his Pap in the powerful bond they share – and middle school-young adult readers will see themselves in the admirable traits of the lead teenagers. Also a book for parents to read to younger reader as many have with the Harry Potter series. It also reminds me a bit of the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boy mysteries that I grew up with. I highly recommend!!
