Dungeons & Dragons has existed for over 40 years and in this brand new book, Dungeons & Dragons Art & Arcana examines not only the history of the well known tabletop game, but also the art that surrounds it. This visually stunning book is a beautiful companion to the universe that has been evolving for decades. Whether you are a dedicated gamer or someone who just finds these fantastical worlds interesting this book is something you should check out.
Beginning with a Foreword by Joe Manganiello, who has loved Dungeons & Dragons since the 1980’s, introduces readers to the deep connections players have made with this game. As he shares his continued love of the game and even a recent D&D themed gift he received from his wife Manganiello acts as your guide into this tremendously detailed book. The introduction follows this up by breaking down the contents of the book, which will focus on the history of Dungeons & Dragons through not only a written history, but also through the art. This art is not only official game art, but also examples of dungeons and maps used in game play as well as selected images known as Artist Favorites. There are also examples provided of the lore within the D&D universe, which examine campaigns, movies, computer games, and much more.
I wish I could say I was an avid D&D player, but sadly I am a useless at it. I did have a group that I played with and was very excited to create an elf assassin, we blended a few elements of the game to make that work, and I could not roll a sneak for my life. Any time I had to try and move quietly or quickly I would manage to roll a dismal single digit, which often put my entire party in danger. While I may have sucked, I have always been wowed by the world of D&D. I would ask my friends, who were much better players, to share their connection to the game and to show me art and other elements. Dungeons & Dragons Art & Arcana allowed me to feel a stronger connection to the game and see just how detailed the history behind it truly is. I loved reading about and seeing the growth of characters and how the game had worked to evolve over the years. My absolute favorite element was definitely seeing the art provided throughout the book. I also loved the inclusion of advertisements for D&D, which I found delightfully retro. Dungeons & Dragons Art & Arcana is a fantastic read that you can sit down with and enjoy over either one marathon read or an extended period of relaxed reading.
