The Story Behind Book Review from @kleffnotes

The Story Behind began as a podcast and after finding success there Emily Prokop has created a companion book, The Story Behind: The Extraordinary History Behind Ordinary Objects. Within this Prokop shares some of the surprising histories behind the objects you see every day and probably never gave a second glance to. This fun and fact filled book is the perfect read for the curious mind.

The book has nine sections that span the gamut of items from things you’d find in your office to weapons and machinery. What I love is that each section is a bit of a hodge podge of the topic that it covers. In her very first section, The Office, Prokop includes bubble wrap and Comic Sans. Both of these things are found in offices, but seeing them put together just led to a sort of aha moment while I was reading about just how diverse the things you might see in one place are.

My favorite section was Food and not because I was hungry while writing this review. Okay, maybe the peanut butter section did have me looking for a snack, but I am fascinated by the origins and rumors connected to food. While I love peanut butter, my favorite object in this section was the chocolate chip cookie. The debunking of the famous myth was so fun for me and gave so much more insight into this simple little treat. For those of you who might not want to read a full history of a specific object, though Prokop’s details are wonderful, at the end of each object there is a TL;DR or too long; didn’t read section that gives you the basic facts. There is also a little did you know piece for each item that gives you some extra trivia to share. If you are a fan of trivia and tidbits you should give this book a read. You can find The Story Behind: The Extraordinary History Behind Ordinary Objects on sale now.
