A Very Excited #Creampuff: Carmilla Movie Speculations from @kleffnotes

Some of the fabulous cast of Carmilla were at FanExpo this weekend and while I wasn’t able to be there in person KindaTV and Carmilla still provided those of us comic can’ters with the chance to see the brand new trailer. I filmed a spur of the moment Periscope of me reacting to the trailer almost as soon as it went up, but I couldn’t really collect my thoughts while doing that. It was comprised primarily of yelling, excited squealing noises, and loud gasps so not really the most straight forward way of explaining what I thought about the trailer. Based on what we did see I have some wild and crazy speculations about the movie that I wanted to share with all of you.

The first thing I wanted to say about the trailer was that it was absolutely gorgeous. The cinematography was stunning and as soon as it began I was just in awe of the work that the team had done to produce this. What unfolded before me was enchanting and while it was all beautiful the moment that stood out to me was the masquerade ball. Not only were Laura and Carmilla waltzing, which is always one of my favorite ways to see the couple together, but the costumes and the inclusion of other characters in a scene that felt pulled from a period romance filled me with such happiness. I also really appreciated the humorous ending, which showed our favorite characters as normal people in a delightfully fun way. Now that I’ve gushed overwhelmingly about how well done this trailer was, which just makes me even more excited for the movie, I’ll move on to the more theoretical element, my wild speculations.

We know already that Carmilla and Laura have been together for five years, but we don’t know exactly what Laf, Perry, Mel, and Kirsch have been up to. I would like to assume that Laf and Perry have also been together this entire time. Laf was pursuing their scientific work and creating things that rival the works of Holtzmann from Ghostbusters, while Perry used her skills as an organizer to start some sort of business. I could see her as one of those professional organizers or the sort of person you hire to fix all the drama going on in your life. Kirsch and Mel I think became unlikely allies in rebuilding the Zetas and the Summers following the fall of Silas University. Mel I think rose within the ranks and after becoming whatever the highest level of Summer exists moved on to righting wrongs throughout the world. Somehow during this time Kirsch found himself wanting to help Mel because her dedication to righting wrongs reminded him of Danny, before she became a vampire. All six of them have stayed in contact, though Laura probably collectively talks for her and Carmilla. I’m still not sure Carmilla is exactly the best at communicating with people who aren’t Laura. Again, this is all purely speculation and I am expecting everything I have said to be proven incorrect on October 26th.

I could try speculating on everything, but I really want to emphasize the masquerade element. I am torn between thinking there is time travel or that vampires and supernatural beings just really enjoy throwing parties that remind them of the past. Now if the house they travel to is magical I could see perhaps the Lady in Black being able to manipulate it so that all of our characters are moved to a pocket of time, 1698 sounds about right, where they experience elements of Carmilla’s past. Now if instead this is a party in the present I am wondering if Carmilla’s return to vampirism leads our heroes into a situation where vampires, or other centuries old beings, are meeting. I have a minor vampire obsession and as I watched the masquerade unfold I couldn’t resist thinking of Dracula’s party in Van Helsing. Yes, I know it isn’t a great movie, but it came out when I was in high school and at peak emo kid. Perhaps in order to learn what is happening to Carmilla everyone has to be willing to fully immerse themselves into supernatural society. No matter what the reason I’m just wonderfully excited to see what happens on October 26th.
