I am currently doing something I never expected to be doing this year. In case you haven’t seen any of the pictures I’ve posted on my Twitter, I am very excited to announce that I’m in Orlando, Florida doing a ton of touristy things. I was invited to come along on a trip, which includes some time at Disney parks. While I’m doing this traveling I decided I wanted to write some articles to connect with some of the things I’ll be experiencing while I’m doing a bit of vacationing. For today I wanted to dive into some of my personal connections to the Harry Potter series since I happen to be enjoying time in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
I will admit I did not begin reading the Harry Potter series as soon as it came out, I’m not even the person who first found them. One day my mom mentioned that she had heard of a series she thought I would like and wound up buying me the first two Harry Potter books in paperback. As soon as I started them I was hooked. The big year for me was when the first movie came out. I had bought a Harry Potter costume that looked like Harry’s outfit from the cover of the American version of the first book and I wore it for trick or treat. No one in my neighborhood had any idea who I was, but I didn’t care. As the release got closer my library announced that they would be doing a costume contest and the winners would receive free tickets to the movie. I then decided that I definitely needed to cut my hair. I had it all chopped off and to my delight actually passed as a boy at the event. I was very dedicated to my costume work, even if I was only 11 years old. I won tickets and I was ecstatic.
As the years passed I got even more involved in the series and wound up buying a Harry Potter robe and over the years continued to amass costume pieces so that I could be as close to perfect as possible. I wore my best outfit to the library for the release of the seventh book and wound up pulling an intense all-nighter so I wouldn’t be spoiled. In college I was delighted to learn that my small branch campus had a Harry Potter focused English course. I immediately signed up and in that class I gained a friend I still talk with to this day, Sam. The two of us did full costumes for the final day of our class, at this time I still had short hair and was very slim so I looked very much like a young Daniel Radcliffe. During our class we each wrote papers focused on our favorite characters, his is Snape and mine is Sirius, and we were each able to present these papers at a Harry Potter conference in Pennsylvania. Sam and I both have a running bit of banter concerning our houses and while he might be a Slytherin and I’m a Gryffindor we totally accept each other. That conference was amazing and was one of the major highlights of my time in college.
If you love Harry Potter as much as I do please feel free to share your own Harry Potter experiences.
