Supernatural has been a powerful force in the battle against depression and suicide. With one of the stars reaching out and sharing his story of depression, Jared Padalecki started his campaign AKF, Always Keep Fighting. Through his campaign, he has helped so many people battle their mental illness. It is truly inspiring.
Now I’d like to share my experiences with Supernatural. I have been a fan since day one. I was instantly hooked and have watched faithfully every week since. During the time Supernatural has been on the air, I have had two children. Both of whom absolutely love the show. I know what you are thinking, aren’t they a little young to be watching, I mean, come on there’s a lot of violence, a lot of death, just a lot of emotion period.
My oldest son, Jake, who will be 10 next month, has learned how he is suppose to be with his little brother. He has learned that family, whether it’s blood or not, comes first. He has learned to stand up for what is right. He has learned that right might not always be easy, but it leads to good things. He has learned there is no stronger bond than the one he has with his brother. Those lessons are so valuable.
Supernatural has also been a savior for my youngest son, Noah. Noah is 8 and high functioning autistic. Any parent of an autistic child will tell you, it is a daily challenge, it can be frustrating for you and the kid. Most children like Noah, have a difficult time expressing emotions. Their reactions to some things can be a terrible tantrum, that is so very difficult to get back under control. Sometimes, it can be quite embarrassing when out in public, the stares and glares from others, the whispers about how bad a parent you are, during a tantrum. As a parent, you do whatever you can to help your child.
Through Supernatural, Noah has learned different emotions and the proper way to react and deal with them. He has learned to express sadness when something sad happens. He has learned to cry to release that sad feeling. He has learned to express happiness when something wonderful happens, now on the show that doesn’t happen much lately, but when the Winchesters save someone, it is a happy moment. He has learned to stand up for himself and others and not to let anyone stand in his way just because he is a little different than they are. He has learned anger. The show has shown us several different characters being angry and they choices they have made in that anger. He has learned there are consequences to those actions. He has even learned to take responsibility for his actions. He has learned compassion. He has learned empathy. Above all else, he learned how to express love and what it means to be family. Since he started watching this show, his brother and him have became very close. They will pick on each other daily, but let someone else pick on either one of them and you got to deal with the other.
Supernatural is one of the best shows out there, for many different reasons. My favorite reason is the lessons it has taught my boys in family, love, and doing the right thing. For teaching my son how to express real emotions and how to deal with them. This show to me, is so much more than entertainment and I thank each and every person of the crew and cast as well as the creator for bringing this to the millions of people, for it has helped us each in many many ways.
