While I am the one posting this article, it was actually written by our friend and new contributor KRentz. Everyone give him a warm welcome as we will hopefully see more articles of his in the future. You can follow him @KRentz_Official on twitter for his awesomeness as well as his other work. Now on to the iZombie love…
iZombie Season 1 by KRentz
Beware of zombies, but not as you would think.
This past spring the new show “iZombie” premiered in march. Created by Diane Ruggiero and
Rob Thomas, directed by a dozen different people, and behind the scenes crew who make
everything that is iZombie off screen; it has been made into such a widespread fad of
entertainment that the series can hardly keep up with itself. After just its first season iZombie has
been nominated for Teen Choice Award’s “Choice TV: Breakout Show.” With it being produced
by writers of the CW and it’s talently selected cast, it comes to no surprise that iZombie has made
waves just by being as undead as its characters. Along with the talented crew, the producers from
the CW definitely pulled no punches when picking its very talented cast with people such as
Rose McIver, Robert Buckley, David Anders, and Aleks Paunovic to just name a few. This was a
great start to their plan for iZombie, but let the actual process be analyzed on how well it worked.
Plot
Olivia Moore, played by Rose McIver, a Medical Resident goes to a boat party one night after
work and finds that people on the boat were selling what is called “Utopium” and all of a sudden
everybody breaks out in a phased madness. Next morning she finds herself waking up in a body
bag, without a pulse, dead. She learns that she is a zombie and spends 6 months at medical
school learning to become a mortician. Now she works with Dr. Ravi Chakrabarti, played by
Rahul Kohli, and Detective Clive Babineaux from Homicide, played by Malcolm Goodwin, on
cases that she learns of from the detective or from her patients. Yes, her patients. As being a
zombie, ‘Liv’ still needs brains, but the writers from iZombie have twisted zombies in a different
direction than most of us are used too.
A New Direction For Zombies
As any show will do, iZombie has brought things to the screen that they will be remembered for,
but these things at a bit drastic compared to what the average zombie fanatic is used too.
Physically, every zombie does not look dead or have flesh hanging from parts of their bodies, in
fact they look moderately healthy. The only thing different is they have platinum blonde hair as
well as an intense white colored paleness.
One new feature for zombies however, are their “psychic powers.” Once a zombie ingests a
brain, they have the ability to receive flashbacks from the dead person’s brain they just ate, as
well as start acting like said person. In one episode Liv starts seeing things more aesthetically
because she ate an artist’s brain who painted very studiously.
Other than picking up new insight, the zombies can pick up other “abilities” and continue to
learn to use them far after they have had the brain they acquired it from. Although some of these
characters don’t need additional abilities as they can be very heavily equipped with their
personalities as the iZombie writers have so graciously bestowed upon them.
Characters
Other than being the main character, Liv is a girl who has had to think she needs to go through
this zombie thing alone, blocking out almost everyone in her life, until her boss Dr. Ravi finds
out. Ravi is an inquisitive character and more outspoken than most medical examiners. Even
though he I used to talking to dead people like all M.E.’s are, be is thrown off by Liv. He
becomes more involved with her when he catches her eating a brain and becomes very animated
with her existence, no pun intended.
Another main character that works with Liv is Detective Clive Babineaux, played by Malcolm
Goodwin. He is a very curious man, especially for a detective. He has a mysterious personality
yet is very friendly and suggestible in kind terms and plays a great team member with Liv during
investigations.
Major Lilywhite, played by Robert Buckley, is Liv’s exfiance. Even though given that title he is a very interactive character, bonding with everyone in the show, good and bad. Seen from a
broad scope of the show, he becomes involved with every main and sub story within the plot.
Although he is Liv’s ex, he has a very good relationship with her and her friends.
As for team bad guy, David Anders plays the character Blaine Debeers, and oh can he act. Blaine
is a snarky, witty, deceptive character that at one point tries playing all the angles of the show
both bad and good. He has people who work with him as well as his clients that he tricks into
buying his product. The main thing about him though is to always pay attention to him, because
he is a very spontaneous character in which he even surprises himself with his own ideas.
What To Watch For
As everyone was surprised by this new show, they were surprised even more on how well this
show did, as well as I was. The main thing that I would like to congratulate iZombie on is the fact
that they are like nothing else out there. They are so diverse that one can not put one genre to this
show. It is so different from everything else which is why I believe it is so liked. Things that I
will be looking for in the new season premiering is the influenced relationships between Liv
and Blaine, as well as the possibility of the furthering buddy-hate relationship between Major and Julien. For anyone who likes to watch television, I would recommend this to you. You can’t please everyone, but this shoe almost has something for anybody and everybody. I also cannot wait to see the new barriers that iZombie breaks down in season 2, and I hope that word of this incredible show grows as well as it’s fanbase.
