With Heroes: Reborn hitting TVs across nation, I thought I’d take you back to where it all began. Today I’ll be diving into Heroes season one. Hopefully, you’ve all seen it, if not I recommend checking it out. Most of what happens in the first season will be talked about here, I have intentionally left somethings out so maybe just maybe, you’ll look into the show and see for yourself.
Set in 2006, random people around the world begin to notice they have special powers. Peter Petrelli, a nurse, begins having dreams that he can fly, not just normal dreams, vision-like dreams, which completely convince him that he can fly. He believes wholeheartedly he is meant for something special. He tells his politician brother Nathan, about his dreams, to which Nathan dismisses them. After much debate, Peter calls Nathan and tells Nathan where to meet him. Peter is on top of a building, ready to jump off, with his brother standing on the ground with no way to stop Peter. Peter jumps, but does not fly, instead it is Nathan who flew and rescues his falling brother. Peter does end up in the hospital, his weight was too much for inexperienced flyer Nathan. Nathan wants to deny what happened, however, reveals to Peter that he did in fact fly to rescue Peter, but his weight was too heavy and right before they hit the ground Peter began to fly himself. Peter learns over time he gains the powers of the ones he’s around.
Claire Bennett is introduced as our cheerleader and this chick is jumping off of anything, with her friend filming. After falling several stories, we see a dead Claire just laying there, bloody and broken. All of the sudden this girl starts healing and stands up putting up bones back in place. This is when we learn she has been attempting death stunts for a while and no matter what she does she cannot get hurt. She is almost raped by a classmate, but he accidentally kills her in the process and dumps her body. She awakens in the morgue, chest cavity completely opened and yes she puts herself back together there too. Upon returning to school and shocking the hell out of her killer, she talks him into letting her drive his car. She lets him know she knows what he did to her and he’s not going to get away with it. She slams the car into a cement wall, going as fast as she can, knowing she can’t be hurt. She wakes up in the hospital with her parents and learns her almost rapist is still alive and boy does he want to press charges for his wrecked car. After a bit, Claire tells her adoptive father, Noah Bennett, what almost happened, leaving out the dying part. Little does anyone know, Noah, works for The Company, a secret organization that hunts down the special people, they call evos. We meet Noah’ s partner, known as the Haitian. The Haitian is an evo with the power to erase your memories, along with the power that blocks other evos Powers around him, he’s like a power blocker. Noah has the Haitian erase Claire’s rapist’ s memories. The first season revolves around saving her. Saving her from a superhuman serial killer, Sylar.
Heroin addict Isaac Mendez, is a painter that can paint the future after his drug binges. He paints the nuclear explosion set to happen in New York, as well as many events that unfold during the first season. He paints the deaths of Peter, Claire, and himself. Sylar kills him to gain his power. Both Sylar and Peter believe they are the reason New York explodes, due to them both absorbing another’s nuclear like power. Office worker Hiro Nakamur, from Japan, learns he can move time. He wants to be the ultimate hero. After some testing of his powers, Hiro soon learns he can teleport and time travel. I, personally love Hiro, he happens to be my favorite character of the series, but that’s just me. Hiro teleports himself to New York, and finds a comic book he is on the cover of. The comic is about him. He goes back to Japan and shows his best friend Ando, the comic and what he can do. Their friendship is amazing. Normal Ando sticks by Hiro’ s side no matter what, even when Hiro tries to push him away. We could all use friends like that. Hiro time travels to the future and sees that it has been destroyed. He goes back and sets out on a mission to prevent what he saw from happening. Also, Hiro believes that a sword in his father’s possession is the key to his powers, that leads into season two as well. Future Hiro comes back to warn Peter of the upcoming events and tells him save the cheerleader save the world, which was the catch line for season one when it first appeared.
Indian scientist Mohinder Suresh, goes to New York to continue his recently murdered father’s work in finding these superhuman. He has almost completed his father’s formula on how to find them. You soon find out that his father was working with these people to try and find out about their powers and help them learn to use them. Mohinder learns that his father was working with a person with abilities named Gabriel Gray. Gabriel fixes watches, like his father, with knack for knowing how things work. Just when Dr. Suresh (father) is ready to give up on Gabriel’s abilities, Gabriel figures out he can take others abilities for his own. Only thing is, he kills them, cut their heads open, and figures out from their brains how their powers work. After stealing a power, he returns to the doctor and shows him his “new” ability. Dr. Suresh eventually figures out what Gabriel is doing, he hides his list of special people, he has been working on. After some words, Gabriel kills the doctor, goes searching for more abilities as he adopts the name Sylar, the name on his watch. He returns to Mohinder, impersonating another person with abilities Zane, pretending to help him with his father’s work, when really he just wants Mohinder to finish his father’s formula so he can find all the people with abilities and gain all their powers. Mohinder does finish the formula, him and “Zane” set out to find the others and help them with their powers. After a few of the people they went looking for end up dead, Mohinder reveals to “Zane” that he knows who he really is and knocks him out, after Peter arrives and rescues him. Mohinder wants revenge for his father’s murder.
We have quite a few more characters in this series and to be quite honest this article would be much too long to list them all, such as Niki and Micah. So again, before I continue, I plead with you, if you haven’t watched this series, please check it out.
We have policeman Matt Parkman, who can read minds. He is introduced finding a little girl Molly Walker, hiding from killer Sylar was who just slayed her parents. He goes on to help out with the Sylar case. Sylar was looking for Molly because she has the power to find anyone, anytime, anywhere, just by thinking about them. She is the key in finding all of the evos.
Peter learns from Isaac’ s painting that if he goes to save the cheerleader from Sylar, he will be killed. Risking his life goes anyhow. Peter holds off Sylar and jumps off a building with Claire, making sure Sylar cannot get a hold of her. He dies but he has absorbed Claire’s healing powers and begins to breathe again. Thank goodness too, because Peter is my second favorite in this series. He has the best heart and always tries to do the right thing.
Sylar is captured by Noah Bennett. He later escapes. He has the Haitian erase everyone’s memories, except he doesn’t erase Claire’s. He was ordered to, but felt that it was best for Claire to know what is going on. Peter falls into a coma, having more visions. This time his visions show him being the cause of the explosion. There is a man in the visions that he doesn’t recognize. He later meets this man, and absorbed his power of invisibility. After much convincing the man Claude Rains, agrees to teach Peter how to control his powers. Claude is completely convinced that Peters family and friends are distracting him from being able to fully control his powers.
Claire contacts her biological mother Meredith Gordon, who controls fire. After some talking and other conversations, it is revealed that Nathan Petrelli is her biological father.
Noah and the Haitian are on the hunt for Peter and with them hot on his trail Claude leaves Peter. Claude has had some past dealings with Noah and chooses not to go that route again.
There are quite a few people behind the scenes forcing this explosion to happen. But like I’ve said, most of what happened in in this article, although a lot is purposely left out. Eventually this group, excluding Isaac for he was killed, end up in New York, fighting to save themselves, along with all of New York, and of course to rid the world of the bad guys. With all of them in a courtyard like place, it’s time for there final showdown with Sylar. Peter gives Claire a gun, knowing if he goes nuclear as in his visions, she is the only one who can get close enough to him to kill him before he explodes. Hiro pops up and stabs Sylar in the chest with his sword, before.time traveling to 1671 Japan. Matt takes four bullets to the chest. And just as Peter is about to explode Nathan flies him as high as he can into the night’s sky. With everyone looking up, we see the explosion in the sky, and just like that Nathan and Peter are gone.
I have to say I absolutely loved this first season. However, none of this article is in complete order as I jumped around while introducing characters. The show kept me on the edge of my couch wanting more at every turn. The effects were awesome. The cast was well picked out. Everyone involved with this season, bravo!!
