Family relationships can be difficult under any circumstance but when you are dealing with a relative who is the head of an alien army that invades Earth and you’re Earth’s champion, the relationship takes on an entirely new level of difficulty. This article contains information from the mid season premiere “Blood Bonds” so if you haven’t seen the episode, please do not contain reading.
I love how Supergirl has been exploring Astra’s motivation for her actions. When she first appeared on the show, viewers reasoned that she was Aurora’s (Kara’s mother) bad twin sister, the definition of the “evil twin”. But in the last few episodes of Supergirl, more about Astra and Aurora has been coming to light. They shared different opinions on what was right for Krypton but since Aurora was in a position of authority and Astra was going against the laws of the planet, Aurora was forced to have her sister locked up for what was considered treason.
Astra believed Blood bonds us all and felt what her sister did to her was the ultimate betrayal. She expressed this same sentiment to her niece in the hope that the blood they share would help to convince Kara that she wasn’t her enemy. She tries to convince Kara that she is not the enemy. I get the impression that Kara is starting to will her doubts about her aunt.
What draws me to Supergirl is not the action sequences and special effects (which are cool) but the human emotion and relationships: Alex and Kara, Kara and Jimmy, Winn and Kara and Kat and Kara. Now, we have Kara and Astra and to a certain extent, Astra and Aurora. We are learning more about the Jor El family.
I have a feeling that family politics and loyalties will be the underlying theme throughout the season. Will Kara be forced to choose between her Earth family and her Krypton one? And what will this choice mean for her and the fate of Earth?
What do you think of Astra? Should Kara trust her? Sound off in the comments or tweet @thenerdygirlexp or @stacyamiller85 .
Supergirl airs Mondays at 8/7c on CBS.
