I decided to watch The 100 when it was announced as a new mid season show coming to The CW in the Spring, 2014. But that was because I’m a CW junkie, I’ll watch all the shows the network has to offer. But what about people who have difficulty in deciding what to watch? How do they make their decision?
In the age of social media, a lot of people rely on referrals from others on Twitter, Facebook etc. What show has the “buzz” aka what is the hottest “thing” on the tube?
Case in point- Let’s take a look at the newest social media darling, The 100. When it premiered on March 19, 2014, The 100 received favorable reception and decent enough ratings. But the names Clarke and Bellamy were only famiilar to those who watched the show. Fast-forward two years later, you can’t go on Twitter without seeing countless images of characters from The CW show about life on Earth after a nuclear apocalypse. The teen heroine, Clarke, is depicted as a young woman of strength and courage. She has become the epitome of what young girls want to be. Then there is the other popular teen character, Bellamy. He is a natural born leader and very nurturing to younger sister, Octavia. Nothing draws fans in more than a hero who faces life’s difficulties and dangers but has a soft spot for a younger sibling (Supernatural’s Dean Winchester anyone?) But put Clarke and Bellamy together (actually fans have done this more than the show itself) and you have the makings of a talked about drama via the popular process known as shipping. A person tells a friend to watch, that friend tells someone else and so on and so on and so.
Social media is the quickest public relations outlet there is and network executives know it. That’s why more of them have taken to posting on Twitter. It is the fastest way for them to find out how well their show is doing. The 100′s creator, Jason Rothenberg has become very active on Twitter posting show comments and appreciation tweets to viewers.
So the next time you are facing the decision on what show to watch, consult the reviews i.e. Twitter feeds.
