The delightful musical comedy that is Galavant focused on a king and queen in its third and forth episodes and as always their stories were highlighted with beautiful song accompaniments.
This article contains spoilers for the episodes titled “Aw Hell, the King” and “Bewitched, Bothered and Belittled” so if you haven’t seen these episodes, please stop reading.
Galavant and King Richard continue on their joint quests to pursue their separate interests: Galavant to rescue one true love Isabella and Richard to get his kingdom back. Both seem unattainable. King Richard learns that the kingdom is no longer his and he’s a forgotten monarch “You’re the guy who use to wear the tin hat because his father wore a tin hat,” Richard is told. In a song beautifully performed by Timothy Omundson, King Richard laments “If I were a Jolly (blacksmith, farmer, brewer).” But realize that he is only suitable to be what he was born to do, which is king. You can almost hear the sadness in King Richard’s voice at the song’s conclusion. I’m pleased that the writers have progressed his character by turning King Richard from the buffoonish cruel ruler he was in Season 1 and made him an awkward but basically good man. He’s now someone to root for, a hero like Galavant himself. The addition of childhood playmate (and possible love interest) Roberta to the mix will build on King Richard’s developing character. It’s also interesting to note that Roberta seems to have feelings for King Richard but he is oblivious, adding to his growing endearment.
The other character that is undergoing a change in Season 2 is Madalena. When we first met her on Galavant, Madalena was the fair maiden and Galavant’s one true love. Viewers and Galavant soon realized that Madalena only wanted to be queen for the riches and title the position offered. In “Bewitched, Bothered and Belittled”, viewers got a glimpse into Madalena’s life as a little girl. She was teased by some privileged royal girls for being poor and not having a “nice pair of earrings”, We learned that Madalena vowed from that moment to be like them, thus a cold and heartless queen is born. I appreciate how the writers are giving their villainous characters reasons for their villainy and the will to change. My heart broke for Madalena when the roast dinner she thought she was invited to turned out to be a roast for her, another opportunity for the rich to pick on her and remind her of her humble beginnings…once a pleasant girl, always a pleasant girl.
It’s a pity that King Richard and Madalena are no longer together, they are becoming people each could love.
Season 2 to shaping up to be one of character advancement. What do you think of the characters if King Richard and Madalena? Sound off in the comments. Or tweet @thenerdygirlexp or @stacyamiller85 .
