#Wentworth – Could They Have Been Governor?

I recently wrote an article addressing who really runs Wentworth Prison, talking about the power of both the guards and the inmates.  But I neglected to mention several important members of the prison staff team.

This article contains spoilers so if you haven’t seen Wentworth, please do not continue reading.

The persons to whom I am referring are the right hand of the Governor- Vera Bennett, Will Jackson and Matt Fletcher.

These dedicated officers have been in the trenches with the inmates more so than the governors and have faced situations that the prison’s Board of the Directors couldn’t imagine.   But could they eventually be Governor of Wentworth Prison?

Let’s take a look at each of them separately.

Vera Bennett

Vera Bennett has been on staff as a deputy at Wentworth Prison for a long time.  Her dedication to her job made her logical choice for Governor after the death of Meg Jackson.  She held the position temporarily but was replaced by Erica Davidson. Many feel that her docile manner and need to befriend the prisoners instead of enforcing the rules caused her to be passed over for the promotion.  However, she undergoes a personality change after issues involving her terminally ill mother and failed almost relationship with co-worker, Matt Fletcher.  Additionally, Vera has allowed herself to be mentored by Governor Joan Ferguson and that work association seems to have added to her harden character.

Vera

Will Jackson

Will Jackson was the husband of former governor and prisoner riot casualty, Meg.  Even though he has never formally expressed an interest to be governor, it’s anyone guess whether it was something he and Meg discussed behind closed doors.  Like Vera, he has a sensitivity to the prisoners and their needs (in particular Bea Smith) that may make him a pushover if he were governor.  He also has a short fuse and has loss his temper on more than one occasion (especially with co-worker, Matt Fletcher). Finally, would he be good with budgets and answering to the prison board? Smart money’s on no.

Will

Matt Fletcher

Matt Fletcher REALLY wanted to be governor.  He has a no tolerance attitude as far as the prisoners are concerned that makes him the kind of candidate the prison Board of Directors like, especially Channing, who gave Fletcher his support.  Unfortunately for Fletcher, Joan Ferguson’s appointment to the governor position signaled the end of his career at Wentworth.  She took an instant dislike to him and labeled him an incompetent. Fletcher was the victim of a hit and run which left him mentally incapable of continuing a career in law enforcement.  It’s a sure bet that Ferguson was behind the accident though her motives involved a longstanding vendetta against Will Jackson over something in her past.

So, if you were on the prison board, which of these candidates would you choose as the new Governor?  Sound off in the comments. Or tweet @thenerdygirlexp or @stacyamiller85 .
