Prison life can be hard. But when you have a friend on the inside with you who will give their right hand (sometimes both), it’s a little more bearable.
This article contains spoilers so if you haven’t seen Wentworth, please do not continue reading.
Sue “Boomer” Jenkins is Franky Doyle’s best friend in Wentworth. Actually, Franky’s only friend, as most of the women in Wentworth Prison are either part of her “crew” for the status it offers or are her enemies.
Boomer genuinely loves Franky and will do anything for her. She’s basically Franky’s enforcer in Wentworth. If anyone acts out of line or if Franky deems someone needs to be taught a lesson, it’s welcome to the ‘School of Hard Knocks’ (literally) with Boomer’s fists as the teacher.
But what does Boomer get out of the friendship? Boomer wants someone to care about her as her boyfriend cheated on her. She’s insecure and being Franky’s friend gives her some confidence. It also makes her feel important as she’s Franky’s “Number One”; if Franky were the President of The United States, Boomer would be her Vice President (though more like her Secretary of War).
The friendship of Boomer and Franky changed after Bea burned Boomer’s hands in the steam press as punishment for Boomer going against Bea’s wishes by beating up Liz for telling Ferguson about the drugs. Boomer felt she was justified because she had gotten seven additional years on her sentence and was hurt (both physically and emotionally) when Frankie didn’t come to her aid to stop Bea. Boomer was hurt by Franky’s non-action on her behalf and questioned whether Franky cares about her.
