When you have to pull off an entire episode without one of your  major characters, it becomes tricky.  Sleepy Hollow managed to pull it off in its mid season premiere episode,”One Life”.

Ichabod has been on a mission to find Abbie to the point of desperation. He believes he’s the only one capable, and Jenny feels guilt because Abbie sacrificed herself for her. Team Witness ends up pursuing separate leads, with Joe and Jenny working together and Ichabod being a lone wolf.

That is until Agent Foster joins him after getting an expected initiation into the world of the supernatural after Ichabod inadverently unleashes a demon that feeds on desperation. Exposition later in the episode reveals that her parents were killed by something unexplained, causing her to want to learn everything she could about that world.

It is obvious help much Abbie means to every one as “One Life” is full of testimonials to her and the impact she’s had in their lives. Sleepy Hollow is a show about teamwork and loss and sacrifice are inevitable for the greater good.

The flashbacks in the week’s episode focus on Nathan Hale, the historical colonial spy who was caught and hung. In Sleepy Hollow’s version, he is Ichabod and Betsy Ross’ partner and is the example for sacrifice. It would have been nice if the flashbacks served to defeat the week’s monster or helped find Abbie, but at least Betsy Ross’ appearance wasn’t a distraction as in past episodes. Here’s hoping the show can find some way to integrate the character better.
Jenny and Joe again embarked on an Indiana Jones quest for an ancient map to help locate Pandora. Their adventure felt eerily similar, except for when Jenny finally admitted that she loved him.
Agent Foster is a welcomed addition to Team Witness as long as the show doesn’t try to force a romance between she and Ichabod or use her as some sort of replacement for Abbie in her absence. The character works as ‘an addition to but not as an instead of’. But as viewers got a glimpse of Abbie at episode’s conclusion, she’s alive and will hopefully rejoin the gang soon.
It looks like part of Pandora’s plan involves a monster convention converging on Sleepy Hollow. The fun never ends for Team Witness!
