It was interesting to see the Black Mercy as part of the Supergirl universe, though I have to say it was the least thing I enjoyed about the episode. But the episode was the perfect balance of family and honor with a mix of emotion, action and comedy.
Let’s start with the comedy first. We have Melissa Benoist proving she has comedic talent to match her dramatic in the scene with her as J’onn playing Kara at CatCo. Speaking of comedy, Calista Flockhart’s delivery of one-liners are very funny. As Cat Grant, she has a dry wit that is unmatched.
“For The Girl Who Has Everything”focused on the important of family and the connection of the Danvers sisters. We have Kara being put in a hallucinatory state via the Black Mercy where we see more of the Krypton life. Is Kara better off had she remained in that world? This is the question the hallucinations are basically asking her and the audience. Then, we have Alex who will do anything to get her sister back including entering her dream-like state to try to get her to remember her life on Earth in order to bring her home. Kara and Alex share a closeness that proves that you don’t have to be born into it to be a family.
Kara may have been born an alien but for all intent purposes, she is human. However, she comes close to crossing the line while battling Non. But her humanity and the fact that she is a good person win out.
The best action of the episode involved Alex killing Astra. I’m sorry to see Astra go, I’ve enjoyed Kara’s banter with her Kryptonian relative, I think there was definitely more to their story than we got to see.
Overall, not Supergirl’s best episode of the season but it had some strong moments. The family relationships are the powerful aspect of the series narrative and as long as Supergirl focuses on those, it’s a win for everyone.
