Charles In Charge premiered on CBS on October 3, 1984. It told the story of Charles a college student at the fictional Copeland College in New Brunswick, NJ who takes a job as a caretaker for Stan and Jill Pembroke to their three children Jason (Michael Pearlman), Douglas (Jonathan Ward) and Lila (April Lerman) in exchange for free room and board in the family’s basement.
Low ratings lead to the show’s cancellation. But it found new life in syndication. The Pembroke family move away and their house is sublet by Ellen Powell (Sandra Kerns), who’s husband was a rarely seen naval officer. Charles retained his room and his job as a male nanny to Powell children Adam (Alexander Polinsky), Jamie (Nicole Eggert) and Sarah (Josie Davis). Grandfather Walter Powell (James Callahan) moves in to be a father figure to his grandchildren. Willie Aames of Eight Is Enough fame played Charles’ best friend Buddy.
Nicole Eggert, who played Jamie, went on to star in Baywatch.
Who could forget the memorable theme?

Charles In Charge aired 126 episodes before the series ended on November 10, 1990.
I was a big fan of Charles In Charge, watching it Saturday nights. Growing up in the Happy Days and Eight Is Enough television eras, seeing Scott Baio and Willie Aames work their magic again on Charles In Charge was a pleasure.
