I love classic literature and Jane Austen happens to be one of my favorite of the classic authors. From Sense and Sensibility to Mansfield Park, her novels bring an elegance to romance and heartbreak.
One of her more well known novels is Pride and Prejudice. So many film adaptations have been made from this one book, but by far the best one has to be Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. This movie was everything and more! It had all of the things I love about the British Regency time period with an added bonus of zombies! This film was adapted from the novel of the same name which was written by Seth Grahame-Smith. He also was the author of Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter. It is fair to say that Seth is a genius at combining the classic with the horrific!
If you are unfamiliar with Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, it is a novel about manners essentially. The story revolves around the Bennett family and in paticular, their second oldest daughter, Elizabeth Bennett who finds it difficult to live in this world of manners and polite conversation. There is obviously one major difference from the original novel to its recent adaptation and that is of course zombies. The movie goes through a brief history in the beginning and tells of the expanse in trade around the world. Along with spices and silk, these ships brought with them a virus that brought the dead back to life.
To story line follows similarly to the original novel in that Mrs. Bennett is determined to marry off all of her daughters to well-to-do husbands. This time period after all is one where women don’t get to earn their fortunes. Property and money was to be given only to a male heir. If there was no male heir, it was given to the husbands. However, with the zombie threat ever looming, Mr. Bennett is determined that all of his daughters will be trained to be warriors to be able to survive.
It was interesting to see women for the most part taking care of business and kicking major ass! I admit that I haven’t read the novel adaptation but after seeing the movie I am definitely going to check it out now! If you haven’t seen the movie, I highly recommend it. The marriage of classic literature and zombies is a match made in horror heaven! It was funny and had all the little high society jabs that one makes in polite conversation. It also had some creepy zombies!
The way the zombies act reminded me similar to iZombie. In iZombie, Liv Moore is able to retain her human aspects with the help of brains. It is somewhat similar in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies as well, but I don’t want to spoil anything for those of you who haven’t seen it!
Check it out now if you haven’t!
