If you are a Supernatural fan, you know that today, July 12, is one of the biggest days of the season: The first day of filming for the new season.
The ideas expressed in this article are that of the writer and is based on what the author believes happens on the set.
The cast and crew of Supernatural have approximately a two month hiatus before returning to set to start filming again. What must it be like bringing the world of the Winchesters to life? Well, I know I may speak for millions of Supernatural fans when I say I’d love to be a fly on the wall on set.
First of all, Sam, Dean, Castiel and Crowley otherwise known as Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins and Mark Sheppard may look very different from the way viewers are used to seeing them on screen. During the break from filming, hair and beards have probably been grown. So, naturally- haircuts and shaves are needed in order for the actors to resemble our favorite brothers, angel and demon. Is this a long process (maybe for Jared Padalecki and his hair) or quick in and out? And what happens to the hair that finds it’s way on the floor in the hair and makeup trailer? It’s doubtful that the professionals who work for Supernatural are saving the locks, though again, there may be some fans out there who’d cherish these souvenirs.
One thing I’d love to see is the first script table read where the actors read through their lines to determine what works and what doesn’t. How cool does it feel for the actors getting back into their characters’ voices after the hiatus? When they hear the script words aloud for the first time, what are their thoughts? And are there many changes from the initial first read through to the final version?
It would be amazing to see what this talented cast and crew go through to make the show we love. What are some of the challenges faced? One of the things I often wondered about is regarding wardrobe. Are the actors contacted prior to when filming is scheduled to begin regarding providing their current weight? During the summer, we all tend to put on a few pounds due to having more time to devote to eating and as the cast of Supernatural get a well deserved time off to spend with family and friends, this may include gatherings in which food is involved.
What about the 1967 Chevy Impala? I’ve read that there are several cars involved, each needed for different aspects of scenes. What kind of maintenance is involved to get Baby in tip-top shape for filming?
There was a popular book series written by K.A. Applegate called Animorphs in which the characters had the ability to morph into animals. I wish I could do this and be the fly on the wall on the set of Supernatural!
Bonus Trivia – What past Supernatural guest actor starred in Animorphs? What character did this actor play in Supernatural?
